John From Cincinnati: After David Milch was done with Deadwood, he created this: the story of an angel come to Earth to save an emotionally shattered surfing family. At least that’s what I think it was about. It lasted one season on HBO in 2007, and was not renewed, as the majority of viewers had no idea what was going on.
I agree that the story was often uneven and confusing — yet I never missed an episode, in fact watching all of them multiple times. This show had some of the most hilarious, emotional, uplifting scenes in TV history; the writing crackled, and performances by Ed O’Neill, Bruce Greenwood, Rebecca DeMornay and Luke Perry, among others, were awesome. HBO just recently added the 10-episode series to On Demand, and my plan was to watch them one at a time, each Sunday, from the beginning. I failed: on the first Sunday I watched five in a row.
