Title: Hit Or Miss II

What are you watching and reading?

Our old friend, who's now experiencing personal difficulties, accidentally deleted few very popular threads. My apologies to all who contributed their time and efforts, shared their thoughts and knowledge. "Shit happens" and unfortunately life is not a box of chocolates.

However we shouldn't let the discussion be silenced. The show must go on, love Queen!

:D :D "Shit happens" and unfortunately life is not a box of chocolates.  :D :D Sven, I didn't realize you had such a sense of HUMOR... I can't wait to use that line.....

No, Laurel, that's not my sense of humor (unfortunately), that's just two quotes from "Forrest Gump".

Flower, any new books you read recently? I saw "Ghost Writer", Bronson is such a wuss, really, (probably one if the worst James Bonds), his casting in the movie was strategically right. The inevitable (spoiler alert, don't read!) bad end is not very Hollywood, haha. Yeah, and if Brits don't have MI6, huh? They all have a department of "wet jobs". Sorry, that's KGB slang though. Must be  called somethin' else.

Saw "Triage" with Colin Farrell, he is good when not playing a hysterical psycho, and in this movie was subtle and truly sad. The acquittal of Franco fascists-criminals sounds to me like a case of aborted justice though, I can't agree with forgiveness beforehand. First - the trial.
Saw "Ice Harvest", for Billy Bob Thornton. Relatively harmless character (of John Cusack) gets the worm, with some sense of balancing the bad and good, that was OK.

Am waiting for "Green Zone".

Laurel, what were you watching? Foxie, you? Anyone? Flower has to rejuvenate, regenerate and just get his groove back, so help!

I so wish I could contribute and say that I get a movie to watch occassionaly, unfortunately not.
My life is so busy with my child, my job, a husband and a mother to take care of I have no time to watch a movie on TV much less rent one.
My plate is full, my heart is closed, and my mind is busy.  Such a life.

I hope to one day be able to stop and smell the roses.  It's just not in the cards for me at this time.

i read Tell No One... totally different ending than the movie with quite a twist... why the script writers decided to change the plot is beyond me... much better...

Now reading the Devil's Teeth about the Farrollone Islands about 20 miles off shore of San Francisco and the study of great white sharks... as a broken down surfer this is fascinating stuff... great whites are older than trees and are probably the closest thing we have to an actual prehistoric "monster" still roaming the earth... they are extremely smart cunning not easily fooled and apparently have "personalities" ... but still would not want to meet one face to face under any circumstances.. the author is Susan Casey who just released Rogue Wave (?) which i'm on the waiting list for...  altho i love the ocean and the sea any salt water body i'm a total surface guy... going a few miles underwater just don't do it for me... riding the waves is fine thank you!  ;)

Never more misleading statement was uttered, Laurel! Taking care of your son, husband and mother can't close your heart, it just fills it to the brim!
That's a blessing - to have people to love and care for, loneliness is a merciless killer.

Anyways, what do you want to say on the subject of mass media, or anything related?

I sometimes get amused by the "pop ups" and commercial ads, like I was once informed that "Today Is International Bra Day". And I thought we only have "Secretary Day" and "Woodcutters Day".  I felt suddenly very behind the curve!  :D

Laurel, smell the roses with your family, that's the best. Love.

Flower, what is "Red Wave" about? Surfing? Environment? LOVE? (ha-ha)

I saw "Green Zone", an exemplary political post-mortem of the WMD lies, Judith Miller lies and the one tragically doomed  enterprise called War In Iraq. Very good, just... should've been shown sometime in October 2004, before the country validated Bush for the second term. Though I think that would've accomplished nothing anyways.

Leaving for a week vacation with a bunch of books I grabbed yesterday, don't remember any titles, all new releases, but not bestsellers. Will tell if anything is worth reading.

I will check on y'all!
Love.

Sounds interesting. I'll read a review first - yours! :)

Read few pages of  "Boulevard", about 15 yr old runaway girl in LA. Good style, will read more. Not much time for reading though. Post your stories, Flower, we are good, aren't we?

The rest of the crowd must be busy working.

"Hi" to everyone anyways.

just got done reading the Devil's Teeth about the study of great white sharks... the title actually refers to the shape of the Farrallone Islands as they appear on the horizon not the double set of chompers on the sharks themselves.... every year the great whites congregate around these islands & the females called the Sisters can grow as large as 25 feet long and almost 8 feet wide at the head.... that is like a bus coming at you with sharp 3 inch long teeth.... okay next time i go surfing or swimming or whatever i'm gonna do my darnedest to not look like a seal!! what's interesting is that those who have survived shark attacks didn't even feel it when it happened... one guy had his leg totally engulfed in a shark's jaws from knee to toe while he was sitting on his board... he whacked the shark on the nose and it let go and as it did so angrily whipped its tailfin around and hit him in the face which required 100 stitches! wow!   :o

Abandoned with the late Brittany Murphy... her last flick.... a kind of Hitchcockian film noir thriller... good tense twisty plot... Peter Bogdanovich steals the show as the head shrinker... but Brittany.. so sad! she's kinda got that Veronica Lake thing going... definitely could've been the film noir queen of the 21st century! yeah!   :(
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on August 29, 2010, 11:11:03 PM
Brittany Murphy could've been and should've been, that's true, Flower. There was strange vulnerability in her screen image.

Coincidentally the novel by Steinbeck son that I read recently,  tells about an invention of a surfboard equipped with an electroshock device that repels sharks, bringing the author of the device serious money. Not sure if such thing exists.

Finished "Boulevard", never knew there are "baby trannies", or that Santa Monica Boulevard is an underage meat market. The standardized plot is somewhat disappointing, the unrequited love/friendship of runaway girl for a gay boy is melodramatic but touching.

Started "The Good Son", heavy book to hold at the ocean edge though! Literally heavy, hardcover.
Skor, the books you mentioned I didn't read. Worth the time?
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: OceanFlower on August 31, 2010, 04:33:09 AM
oh man i'll have to read that one! what's the title again? i mean the surf board one... there are on the market some sort of bracelets or anklets that one is supposed to wear that also pulses some sort of electro shock wave thing but most seasoned surfers with a working knowledge of sharks esp great whites scoff at such things which encourage false bravery etc... keeping in mind that more people are injured or maimed by toilet cleaning products than shark attacks these inventions seem like a scam if you ask me...  oddly in the case of GWs the colder the water the more apt you are to run into one... they are warm blooded and like the cooler waters to stay cool... it also gives them the edge in the hunt since other fish are cold blooded and move a little slower... i guess you might say anything that's been around for 400 million years is gonna learn how to adapt one way or the other... and here's a twist... in the latest Surfer Journal a bunch of ancient surfer dudes are protesting against one of the last shark tour boats on the North Shore... the crew chum the waters so the tourists can watch the GWs eat their free lunch... the surfers say this will a) reinforce the notion of the food/human connection enhancing the danger of attacks b) will make the sharks "lazy" in the sense they will unlearn how to hunt and just show up for a free lunch everyday... like it or not the GWs and other predator sharks like the mako and tiger are kinda like the police of the ocean... do i want to meet one? NO! just like i don't want to meet a croc or a tiger or a polar bear... in the book Devil's Teeth the author relates a story about how some animal rescue squad nursed a seal back to health named it Stumpy and for some unknown reason decided to release the poor thing in one of the most shark infested waters on the planet... while the do gooders were watching their little mascot make a turn around the boat after its "release into the wild" a GW came up and snapped its head off! you can't fool Mother Nature!!   :P

What about boogie board enthusiasts, is there an inspiring movie for them?  ::)

Thanks, Zippy, it's on Netflix.
Next to it is "180 South", a documentary "1968 van trip to Patagonia, South America, a band of bliss-seeking surfer-mountaineers sets out -- in 2007." Exotic, I guess.

Oh, Flower, have a pity, at least a paragraph or two? A single Upper case wouldn't kill you, would it?

The book is "Under the Shadow of a Cypress", I think. Don't get excited, the invention is just a symbol of good karma the main character deserved for protecting ancient secrets and honoring ancestors' will.

GW abbreviation brings to mind the 43th!  :o

sven baby it can't be helped i'm a graduate of the jack kerouac/ee cummings school of beatnik poetics!

zippy yeah i saw that... i was kinda broke at the time so couldn't afford the buy... i hope i get this story right but i read somewhere when brown made Endless Summer II (see the caps sven?) he wouldn't allow one of the surfers featured in the first flick to appear in the second because of his history with drugs and alcohol... c'mon! that's what surfers do!!

and btw just try and find the original soundtrack of ES I by the Shadows... the original I say!

I have not watched TV since "John From Cincinnati" went off the air. OK, not entirely true, I did watch a couple of seasons of "True Blood", and I do catch a segment from Rachel or Keith on the rare occasion. I live upstairs now, and really don't want to get a TV up here, easier to just skip it. But once I find and send back the films I have had since May, I will start watching Netflix again. I had a list compiled, but it disappeared when I lost my hard drive this summer.I would appreciate suggestions for movies and possibly TV shows, if they are really worth it. I never did see season 5 of Dexter, will start with that.

The books I mentioned are worth it, they were among the books making the rounds when I was in CA, each is a quick read, just a day or so. There was something perhaps a bit pat in Benioff's "City of Thieves", but it was a great read. The other, "Sputnik Sweetheart",(Murakami), not pat at all, has that modern Japanese sensibility, a bit post modern, I liked.

I am not moving this am. Reading my nonfiction "Empire....' book.

This afternoon I must go to the dermatologist in Newport, will I run into Sven? Anything is possible and stranger things have happened...(I will be wearing a silver octopus pin)

dang! sorry i missed that, svennie!  :P

skorda... you might want to try Abandoned Brittany Murphy's last film...

I was trying to get Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow but netflix doesn't have that one so I got the Tenth Victim with Marcello Mastrianni (sp) and Ursula Andress... 1964... this flick was far ahead of its time... a kind of futuristic sci-fi thriller and you know what i noticed? all the girls in this flick...  well, had some meat on them... including Ursula... not the stick figures we get today...

I have lined up a flick called Not Forgotten with the guy from the Mentalist... its about this middle class successful family guy whose past as a satanic priest gets exposed...
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on September 03, 2010, 09:49:19 AM
Marcello Mastroianni is such an incredible Casanova (of his time), I saw quite few Italian movies with him, he's always a charmer.

Satanic priest, that's like True Blood, huh?  ::) :D My favorite movie about the satanism is "Exorcism of Emily Rose". There is another, very old Polish movie about a (catholic, should I mention it, but who else but catholic!) priest who is supposed to exorcise a nun. The movie is  a series of scenes where the characters are separated by an iron grid, never in physical contact. I remember well the nun, beautiful young woman, she is just in love with the priest and shows it, in all ways possible. It's at times eroticism and mostly desperation. Don't remember the title, it was too long ago.

"The Good Son" is build on a premise that conflicts in the hot zone of Pakistan, Iraq, etc. is a consequence of some mental/emotional disorder the nations are suffering. Will report on the book later, when done with it.

Skor, you read good books, make killer cocktails and I often miss you. Truly yours, Sven. :-*

I'm glad to hear that you kiss me, Sven. I miss you, too. I miss everyone here also. But last night, Svennie, I was out to dinner. DWT was quite full for a Thurs., I think because it was so hot and still and it felt as if it could be the last true summer day, at that point no one really knew what the storm would bring, so there was a buzz of energy, not actually worry, just concern. We sat outside by the bay and I ate heirloom tomatoes with chevre paratha and a half dozen oysters, I even ordered a few raw littlenecks, thinking that if the storm was a bad one the clamming might not be good for awhile. I was drinking a Hangar One keffir lime gimlet made with fresh lime juice. Anyhow, I was sitting there talking with Taki and Thierry, celebrating having made it through the first week back to work, when I noticed this couple off at a corner table where it was quite dark, and the woman kept looking at me, almost-not quite- flirting, a little smile, a toss of the head, sweet gestures, but when I would meet her eye she and her man would bend their heads together and whisper. They were an attractive couple, casual yet elegant, the woman had lovely hair reddish blond with natural looking waves. I discretely wandered behind their table, trying to catch their words, to perhaps detect slightly accented English, but alas, when I was close to them they said not a word. and so I never knew for sure...but it was, wasn't it?

Hahahahahahahahaha I meant to write "miss", but I wrote "kiss", what's that about? Totally innocent and I have only been drinking ginger ale, so no excuses!

Tomorrow is my day to read, I will go through all of these books I have taken from the shelves brought down from the attic, and I will read.

Well I was TRYING to eavesdrop, but could not. Yes, spies, of course that explains it. I hear they are everywhere these days. Here it is after 2am and no storm has come our way. That is a good thing, it is so sad when trees tumble down in the wind.

oh man skor and sven kissing? one of my most vivid fantasies come true!!    :-*

hoo-hah!

Not Forgotten wasn't bad... it was actually a death cult not a satanic cult (?)...  a little bloody at times but i thought it was good B horror thriller flick..

just saw Solitary Man w/ Michael Douglas... excellent! but it does have a groaner of an ending... MD is really talented he can play any role... good guy bad guy slimeball womanizer you name it! just as an aside the girl from the Office is in this the one that just got married on the show... she was really good and played a very forceful character as MD's semi-estranged daughter...

also saw My Name Is Khan kinda ironic i watched this on 9/11... about an autistic Muslim from India in the USA and the prejudice he meets up with... its kinda like a Bollywood Forrest Gump... it got a little draggy for me... and here we are in 2010 and they still are putting up these little teeny tiny captions in white letters that are barely readable! oy! yellow subtitles is the only way to go! i missed half the dialog because of this!!

the library finally came thru with a copy of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo... I'm mesmerized!

I am still with "The Good Son", (very busy now) learning a lot about customs of Pashtun,  their tribal loyalties. Fascinating. The main female character is a former circus girl, turned Jung psychologist who is a Muslim and a Catholic (love that pluralism, what a wonderful liberating religion could arise from the unlikely symbiosis!) who is captured by those tribesmen under Al-Q control. Tortured, of course, humiliated, but will prevail, I hope, being spiritual and intelligent.

Good luck with the "Girl", Flower, stay away from "death cult", that's sick!

Finished "The Good Son", interesting book with the most artificially inflated ending, felt cheated, that happens, the end is usually the hardest part. Started "The German Woman".
New crop of books recommended by Amazon is coming on the market, where to find time to read! Flower, what about you? Anyone?
No good movies from Netflix, saw 2 not funny comedies, "City Island" and "Leap Year",  and regret that.

THE KILLER INSIDE ME this is one hell of an intense film... based on Jim Thompson's crime novel of the same name... since I read the book I knew what was gonna happen more or less... but I'm afraid if you haven't read the book you may not be able to follow what's going on in re: to some of the flashbacks... e.g.

the young Lou was the one who actually sexually abused the five year old girl and his older brother took the rap for it

the pics Lou finds in the Bible and the flashbacks he has with the woman with her bare bruised buttocks was the housekeeper when his Dad the doctor was alive...

everything else i guess is pretty straightforward...

Matthew Maher portrays a deputy sheriff...

i also read Thompson's auto-bio of sorts and he based the psycho killer Lou's character on an actual deputy he met once who had come to the lonely oil field where he was working at the time to either arrest him or serve papers... wore the leather gloves and subtlely threatened Thompson's life... it scared the hell out of him!

Thompson also wrote The Getaway which was produced twice by Hollywood--the McQueen version is vastly superior and one of my all time favorite films The Grifters...  with a young Annette Bening running nude as often as she can...

I have a different sort of doctor, I've known him, he's been my doc, for over half my life, anyway, last time I went in wife and daughter had brought in novels they were done with and left them on the end table, just take if you're interested. I found The White-Haired Girl~ Bittersweet Adventures of a Little Red Soldier, Jaia Sun-Childers (with a little help from the 'white ghost' hubby) The copy I have is an advance uncorrected proof, so I don't know if the photos made it into the final printing, but it's a good book, go inside the world and mind of some one most women can relate to during those years, the Mao years for her, for us, well, we're all different ages, but if we're old enough to know better, we get to look inside that cultures evolution. It certainly was different than ours, the hard and fast history, yet we are all so same inside that though this was a period of change big and huge for most of the planet, our hearts, our child minds experienced it all in much the same way.
I just love that you guys are discussing stuff I can see too cuz I have netflix too :) Friends reviewing films for me! Everything does go around.

I make a point of watching Modern Family because I like it, I love Ed getting the girl! My old fantasy of Bill marries Jerri sort of fleshed out.  ;)

Thanks, I just found the Mentalist guy and I really like him, some one mentioned somewhere here a film he's made, looking forward to trying that out.

How come the cute guys on tv are so short?

My 30 something son really likes Men of a Certain Age, I do too, offering it up here, since I noticed they showed the pilot again last week.
If I'm posting on the wrong thread, I'm sure someone will tell me. Right?

Cissy, not seeing your face in the mirror - that's a terrible experience, but you've expressed it beautifully. Should I say again how I always enjoy reading your posts? If you have time, would you please, find the poem you mentioned, would be great if you'd share it here!

As to TV shows, here are my choices: Dexter, Weeds, Boardwalk Empire, The Event, Terriers (filmed in San Diego and there's a bulldog). "The Event" is groomed as a replica of "Lost", but I watch it for the aliens connection. "Boardwalk Empire"  delivers flair of Prohibition with all the "trimmings", although the mobsters are as interesting as a pool of sharks, just blood and more blood for money.

Flower, I bought (for $5.99) the last "Girl" of the trilogy, didn't open it yet. Got "Surf Guru" and more from the library, and, alas! - am reading pulp fiction, "Rain Gods", that's bad of me!   :o :D

I will go look for the little poem and come back to here, Hit or Miss. I'm rusty, it's short, I figure it is a hit or a miss!

4:20 a.m. is when birds start their day, earlier in spring and summer though. Good time to wake up, listen to them and then go back to your dreams. :P

"Surf Guru" is nothing, forget it. I am reading "The More You Owe Me" - a story of Elisabeth Bishop trip to Brazil that was supposed to last two weeks and was a beginning of a great love that ended only with death, as that must be with love, I got to add.

Have another novel (a friendship gone wrong story,  somewhere around Santa Barbara, my dream destination) "Twentynine Palms" (sic!)

"The Perfect Getaway" thanks, Cissy, poor Olyphant is playing a psycho, right?
Where is the poem, have you found it? Don't ask where the conversation is, it's where you are, so - speak up! :D

Oh, do you, really?

Flower, who's the murderer in "The Secret In Their Eyes"? There was a very ambiguous answer, even if one was to accept that both characters are traumatized and damaged for life. I liked the ironical treatment of the over-melodramatic scene at the train station, that was good. Thanks for the recommendation.

"I Am Love" is next on my Netflix, should be interesting Italian movie. No, I don't like slashers, Hawaii or not.

Anybody watching any good TV shows? Do tell!

I watched Not Forgotten on Netflix, I really do have a little crush on Simon Baker. B film for sure, but when Mexico starts with it's music and it's unintentional colors, it's magic to me, I can't resist. Not the culture, not the music, nothing, I'm drawn in. He did keep that Brit accent really out of that picture too. I was so glad it was a death is part of life cult instead of a Satanic one, I have issues there.
Different director, a bit of a rewrite, that could be a good film, ya know?

(i must admit that i am completely drawn to My Name is Earl, nice of netflix to stream it for me. i like it so much, i'm looking at a trailer park! Well, not a normal one, one that's stuck in a redwood forest, right next to the Gualala River, and there's a redwood grove on the property too. Private as only that far away from everything living can provide. Plus, it's what I can afford, i don't like paying rent!)

Cissy, we got no redwood forests here, just pines and more pines. I'd be excited to live in a grove with the view of a river, although I'd prefer the ocean view! Could you get an RV? Then you'd be free to travel with the seasons up and down the coast, making stops anywhere you wish.

As to "My name Is Earl", I didn't see any of it, but think that Show is filming something close, they announced a new show "Shameless" with William Macy.

Hope you will settle in that redwoods!

Hi Everyone, It makes me happy to see you here, discussing things back and forth. I have nothing much to say, I was reading "Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson,  I liked it but misplaced it so I read a few Ruth Rendell mysteries, and now I must have read them all, even the Barbara Vines, I think, and now I will go hunt for my book again because I was liking it and besides it is overdue at the library.
I have been relatively immobile and feeling lethargic and not all that great. My head is filled with cotton, or maybe it is dryer lint.

Skor, "Out Stealing Horses" sounds like a diary of an outlaw! Have you found it? Luckily our library allows to renew books online. Property taxes here are outrageous though!

Got a collection of short stories "Orange County Noir", to feed my obsession with all things Californian.
Saw "The Runaways", confirming that Dakota Fanning has no talent. Nothing else is there to say about the movie, the band was much better than that hapless depiction.

I want to hear about "I am Love."
I haven't found my book yet, but I haven't looked, either. I will do that on Friday. I can't face the disater that has become my room, not right now, soon I must.
"Out Stealing Horses" is a very well written rather bleak story of a Norwegian man who desires solitude. I am so draw to the Scandinavian.
We abandoned Oyster Monday and DeWolf Tavern and although I was the one who decided that the quality had slipped to the unacceptable and it was time to move on, I miss it. Nothing has come along to fill that bit of social life, so I am quite the boring one these days. Just trying to get healthy.

No more OYSTERS?  ???   "Boring" or "bored", Skor, is that the "same difference"?  :D You are certainly not boring!

About "I Am Love".  I'm impressed by the many parallels and influences - Madam Bovary, DH Lawrence, Antonioni, Visconti, etc., that every critic had noticed, and completely unaffected emotionally. Too perfect work, too studied and excessively artsy, almost lifeless. Tilda Swinton has the haunting presence and the beauty, I would like to see more of her work. As to being a Russian woman in the movie - no, there would be a completely opposite play of passion.
Let's just say she is a foreigner, that's enough for the film concept. It's pleasant to watch for skillful cinematography and unhurried pace, not the usual high voltage chases.

Do tell!

to my recollection it was the kid that they arrested and then turned into an agent for the secret police... remember when the woman prosecutor is questioning him and calls his arms macaroni or whatever and then exposes himself or vice versa he cops to it then...didn't that film have a The Girl. . . . feel to it in a way??

Flower, I saw the "Girl Who Played With Fire", not as original as the first of the trilogy in my opinion. Is the movie close to the book?

I have got about 15 new books - bought and taken from the library, and have not opened more than two!

Thought to tell you that after reading Best Short Stories 2010 (Pen/O'Henry Award selection) I think some of the writers are hopeless amateurs, and that brought me back to Cheever, Oates ("A Sentimental Education" is excellent!) and Flannery O'Connor. Oh, and accidentally (was close on the shelf) to Anais Nin "Little Birds", you'd like that, I am sure.  Back to basics, as it happened.

Short stories in the "Award" series were submitted by magazines,  it was their WHOLE content, all the published short stories for the year. Amazing, how much work that presented to the jury! There is a long list of magazines at the end of the anthology, if you care. I bet your library has it.

yes i was a little disappointed in the Fire episode... the book is soooooo much better and fills in a lot of the empty spaces that the movie seems to leave gaping... but then again if someone just saw the movie w/o reading the book maybe they wouldn't know the difference... in the book Harriet Vanger is still very much a presence... and Salander has a twin sister which i don't think the either movie touches on... but basically they did stick to the story... now the Hornet's Nest! i am about 3/4 way thru the book & am waiting impatiently for the film!! yeah yeah! and hey that was really Paolo Roberto in the movie!!

i just saw Winter's Bone kinda depressing in a way but a well made film about hillbilly meth dealers in Appalachia... very grim! oh I got Lost In Rio: OSS 117 a spoof on the James Bond movies... i'll give it a B+ not as funny as i thought it was gonna be but it does have it moments.. its sort of like Clouseau on an international level.. next in my que The Sicilian Girl due out 11/30 i was so bored the other day when it was raining i watched Dr Strangelove on the free movie channel... i saw that in the theatre in 1964--what an outstanding film.. i still laughed at the cold war jokes!!
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II

Saw "Winter's Bone", yes, depressing, however not completely hopeless picture, the children are resilient and will prevail.  John Hawkes has stole the movie, I think, - he is brilliant in this role, quietly tragic.

Did you see "Dance With The Stranger" - a murder/love story with Miranda Richardson and Rupert Everett? Can't find it anywhere - not on Netflix, not at Blockbuster. Some good movies are simply history, you can only read about that, it's ridiculous!

I watched (like an addict) "Skins", a BBC TV series, - youngsters, drugs and raves galore, lots of teenage angst and sex of course. Don't know why it got to me, probably the raw energy of youth is the attraction. Very interesting dramatic structure, every episode is centered on one character's story, at the same time weaving in the whole crowd.

Stay around, Flower, you're good to read! How's your thyroid, not acting up, I hope?
Cissy, Skor, Laurel, are you alright? Waxon, old friend, where are you?
I really don't read Facebook anymore, although  remember and still love everyone related to JFC, (remember CC, Waxon? :D :D :D :D)
Patrick, Farley, Back? Would be nice if on occasion some would honor this BB with their royal presence! :-*

Anyways......

OUCH, baby! Bummer....

Although thoughts are mighty powerful, especially the scattered and uncalled for. As to reading - the best books have been read in our youth. The rest is just repetition. A drugstore of oblivion.

And so, back to the potion!  8) :P :D I just finished a short story about Greek political prisoners in 1970 held on one of the islands. Skor, were many of the islands turned into prisons? All?

They were artists and poets, for God's sake! Such danger for a regime. Recalled my friends of long ago, painting their pictures in the belly of the city, in wet, unheated, pitch dark underground caverns, basements of old tenements.

OK, Skor is accounted for, Zippy, Laurel, Waxon, "come out, come out, wherever you are!" (Sorry, a quote)

You outdid yourself!  wknd? AYS?

In case of a global nuclear war the end would be result of nuclear winter, not the radioactive fallout as in that film.

Saw a lot of movies. "Firelight" - Jane Eyere for a modern audience, "I shot Andy Warhole", Lili Taylor's brilliant acting is holding the story, and I learned about interesting crowd at The Factory. "Bordertown", its authors blame all mass rapes/murders on Mexico border on NAFTA, but that's been work of a couple sadistic sociopaths.

What everyone else is reading, watching?

The book I am currently reading is:  http://rockstarbusiness.com (http://rockstarbusiness.com)

Their website has a lot of "teasers" that give you a good sense of what the book is all about.  A small but very good read about doing business online or off.

Flower, are you somewhere out there, surrounded by pretty and merry pin up girls I hope?

Hard to remember all that I have read or watched since we talked last time here, come back, we miss you!
Just finished "The Bishop's Man", loved the sparse style, that was ideal for the misery of an aging priest who lost everything, perhaps including faith, but not the sense of justice.

Saw "Book of Eli" that you mentioned, why the protagonist had to be paired with a beautiful girl? Fights and kills are necessary, but the girl? Oh, Hollywood!

Merril Streep, eh, Skor? She surely is a queen! :-*

Anyways, I'm checking my Netflix queue and adding to your list some movies I liked, in no particular order and without comments, or it would take too long, OK?

Recently watched streaming The Pillars of the Earth with Ian McShane, a medieval soap/romance/ where some anachronisms (people applauding in the church) didn't make it bad. British serials "Wire in the Blood", and "Red Riding Trilogy", too depressing for me. A few days ago killed some time - please, don't laugh - on Prison Break. Yep, the first season was very entertaining, with lots of twists and the palpable tension. A variation on The Count of Monte Cristo. My boys WERE laughing at me, of course!

Women in Trouble 2009
Scorched 2002
Sunshine Cleaning 2008
Choke 2008
Cashback 2007
The Cooler 2003
Frozen River
Croupier
Bernard and Doris 2007
The Duchess
The Boys are Back 2009
Dangerous Beauty
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada 2005
Kinsey
Snow Cake 2006
The Secret Life of Words 2006
Perfume, The Story of a Murderer 2006

Hope you'll like at  least some!

Here's the link to the blog that I follow, somewhere there's a list of best movies of the decade, etc. The guy's taste is not flawless, but the selection is informative and could help you.

For the impatient souls who are still waiting in queue at a library their turn to read the last of "The Girl Who" trilogy, I'd recommend a somewhat replacement, "Between Summer's Longing and Winter's End" by Leif Persson. It's in part a satire and in part a fictional criminal investigation of Olaf Palme assassination. I got through the first hundred pages, so far it's good.

Flower, shame on you! - got everyone worried to death, that's not what friends do to friends.

True Grit on DVD? Must be a pirate DVD, I swear it's made on Brighton Beach, check the label! Good movie, I agree. What I remember vividly, though, it's the scene at the funeral home, where the 14 years old speaks with the wisdom of old age - "The soul has flown". And at the end, the  stark night sky with hundreds stars and the silhouette of the feverishly running horse. It's taken the story to another dimension for me.

Although, being a practical New Englander, I wonder, why Rooster Cogburn didn't take another horse , for a relay, from the ones that were left after the gunfight, just standing there, next to the dead? Would that slow them down? But then, it's logic against art.

Ahem , Flower, what's in the Big Apple - Jodie Foster, tons of snow, or, that I suspect - you? Kinda, sorta unclear..... :D
Hope you've found what you were waiting for.

Happy to know that you are OK. Love.

The new season of 'Justified' starts on Wednesday, 10 on FX. There is one more series there, 'Lights Out' that could be interesting.

The Sundance festival has its winners, if someone wants, here's the link:http://www.imdb.com/features/sundance/2011/blog/
I picked few movies from the list, will wait when Netflix makes them available, as I don't expect our local distributors to show anything that's not a mainstream Hollywood.

I wonder, Flower, where are you - asleep in a subway car in NYC, maybe?

Zippy, any new poems you've found? Do you read Bukowski prose as well, what do you think about it?

Waxon, looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time no see. Not good to forget the old friends, how's winter in your state? Not much snow, I hope.

Patrick, you're around, it's good, how's Newbury street and the wharfs in winter, beautiful, isn't it?

Skor, speak up, you've got a lot to say.

Cassie, come back, please.

The new season of 'Justified' starts on Wednesday, 10 on FX.

'Justified' is one of my favorite shows. It is written by Elmore Leonard fans while Leonard himself, the central character's creator, remains an Executive Producer. So I enjoy the writing. I also like seeing Olyphant wearing the hat and badge again.

(Sheriff Seth Bullock was defeated by Harry Manning in his reelection bid as Sheriff of Deadwood but went on to become a United States Marshal. It was therefore a lot of fun in 'Justified' watching Brent Sexton, who played Harry Manning, playing a sheriff alongside Olyphant playing a marshal.)

In Episode 6 of 'Justified' (The Collection), Peter Jason, who played a "car dealer" in 'JFC', plays a character whose death leads Olyphant to visit Cincinnati. So there's that.

I think the 'Justified' Season One Finale is one of the most enjoyable and moving episodes of anything I've seen on TV in recent years. I'm looking forward to Season Two. By the way, the creator/writer/executive producer of the series is named Yost. So there's that too.

The season finale was easily the best of the whole season, I agree, Eccles. The first episode of the second season is frighteningly medieval, its atmosphere reminded me of Deadwood pigs in Mr.Wu possession, eaters of human flesh - it was that disturbing.

I saw The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest last night--not bad but having read the book no real surprises of course.. Salander's punk rock costume during the trial is to die for and worth the price of admission alone!

Anyone who is familiar with The Girl series written by the late Stieg Larsson might want to check out the detective series written by Henning Mankell who supposedly inspired Larsson to write the The Girl trilogy. It's on my reserve list at the library of course but considering Mankell has written 11 books I hope I won't have to wait 3 months!

Also waiting for Andre Dubous III new book called Townie. Apparently the reknowned write Andre Dubous his father left the family for a younger woman in a state of destitution while he was living the high life at the university getting toasted as an award winning writer. In the meantime, Andre III's brother is almost beaten to death by some local thugs and his sister is raped. In answer to that Andre man's up starts lifting weights and turns himself into one bad ass motherfucking street fighter to get his revenge. Being an old street fighter myself I am looking forward to that one. Under the influence of my first "hippie" girlfriend I guess you might say I became a pacifist during the late 60s & during that time only had three fights all of which centered around defending her honor. The first was because some idiot who had just gotten out of jail molested her almost to the point of rape. He was bigger than me, vicious and a much better fighter. I went into that fight knowing I was going to lose but nobody fucks with my girl. I was getting my head squashed under his boot in the gutter after flailing pool cues at each other when the cops showed up & he ran off. 2d: a friend of her brother's made a comment about her cleavage while i was out the room. I followed him out to the VW van he was in and bitch slapped him around a little; 3d overturned an entire table of glasses and pitchers of beer on some idiot who made a rather rude and lewd comment to my girl right in front of me at the local bar where we used to drink. Good thing I was a pacifist eh??  ;D

Flower, you just have to have a single thread where we could simply read your fascinating vintage stories. Remember Mitch and Cass - "I like vintage"? :-*

The latest "hit" I saw recently in our Portsmouth independent bookstore (maybe the last one surviving) is "Android Karenina", a sci-fi/horror retelling of the classic love story. Who the heck is Ben Winters?
Here is the trend for you - just grab a classic novel, and replace the characters with robots, zombies and flying saucers.

two flicks:

Town directed & starring Ben Affleck; not bad a bang bang shoot em up bank/armored car robbery flick! Ben's pyscho side kick steals the show: after ka-nocking down an adversary w/ a sledge hammer shoots him in the knee & quips, "Oops there goes college soccer!"   :D

Conviction interesting true story starring Hilary Swank but again Minnie Driver steals the show! the recent Oscar winning Melissa Leo as a very bad cop!  :-*

As I'm in recovery, - mind you, not in the AA 12 steps or in Overeaters Anonimous, just from a rather boring flu, I spent last couple days on the couch, surrounded by 5 different clickers, watching everything there was on TV and Netflix.

"I Am Dina", a Scandinavian flick was too much for my weakened spirit, I got the screams of a burned woman embedded in my mind forever. It's a blend of animalistic sex, romanticized horrors of life in the North, with the  unneeded intrusion of a devilishly handsome Russian anarchist. I think the heroine killed him too, I'm not completely sure, as the end gave me more shivers.

Bleak in content and beautiful in cinematography "Girl At The Lake", Italian thriller, very concise story about the ways people take on or try to escape tragedies in their life, with the tying knots end, that I loved, that was weirdly comforting in a "moment of grace" sort. Watch it, if you don't mind reading subtitles.

"Original Sin", where Angelina Jolie shows good expanse of legs and Antonio Banderas looks like a stunned cow. Pretends to be a romance, I believe it's a comedy.

Just finished a book "Mercury Falls" - hilarious at the beginning, wears off at the end, a story from a supposedly fallen angel perspective on one of many attempts of Armageddon, where linoleum plays an important part and it's funny, believe it or not!  Am reading now "Snakewoman of Little Egypt", an anthropologist meets a woman, an ex-convict, location is somewhere in the Bible Belt, time is present. Interesting.

Talk to you y'all later, work time.
Love,
Sven.

Flower, now it's you and me, merchant-zombies don't count.  :D :D :D :D :D

Remember Mr. Frey, the author of the fake memoir (that whole scandal I think was a clever marketing ploy)?
Don't know if you read about his new book, you'll love it.

"A drinking, pot-smoking bisexual Messiah who lives in the Bronx, that's the setup for the upcoming James Frey book, "The Final Testament of the Holy Bible," his version of the second coming."

(http://s4.daemonsbooks.com/up/2011/03/frey-holy-bible.jpg)The price is very steep -  $50.00, not that I'm buying anyways! Maybe for the Kindle price, out of curiosity.

The man is very industrious, if not plainly shameless, he's founded a "fiction factory", hires English lit graduates to turn his ideas into books. However, "I am Number Four" is one of the fruits of such labor, so maybe the business model will be spreading.

I finished in one night "The Bells", a novel-melodrama in three acts, it's a remake of "Cry to Heaven", just more baroque. What are you reading?

I'm presently reading Townie by Andre Dubus III about his experiences growing up in some rather tough neighborhoods & turning himself into a street fighter... pretty grim but I can relate! When I read this some of my ancient scars start itching! LOL!

Just read Life by Keith Richards--what a book! Keef is a trip and what makes it so good is he doesn't take himself so seriously... he tells the readers how to get off on heroin after kicking for awhile without overdosing; his personal recipe for bangers and mash (sausages and potatoes); his obession with shepherd's pie; his long standing love affair with Ronnie Bennett Spector, the real story about falling out of the "palm tree" and snorting his dad's ashes... and yes, obviously he doesn't like the way Mick Jagger shits cause he rips him a new asshole! Keef made an interesting statement to wit: Mick and I are not friends. We are brothers! insightful i say old boy! I really thought it was gonna be one dope and sex scene to the next but its not like that at all.. i was so impressed with it I bought a copy on amazon for my personal rock and roll library plus a funny little book called What Would Keith Do? funny as hell!

I am also side reading A Season in Hell a book by Robt Greenfield about the Stones living in Nellcote France while they recorded Exile on Main Street; Keef discounts a lot of this book as myth but still interesting yeah!

Flower, ain't you a lucky gent! We had wet and heavy snow yesterday. The only good thing - it's washed off by rain.
To follow your lead, I  bought Robert Bly book "Iron John" at the library book sale, for $2! (Stories from ancient times about masculinity and initiation). That's the way of shopping!  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Let's see over the weekend saw The Tourist... can't figger out what the big deal is... Johnny and Angelina could've called their parts in... Angie is of course lovely but i feel like she walked thru the movie just trying to look beautiful okay we know that how about acting a little bit? Johnny? wow that haircut is like from 1971 and I almost have the feeling he's playing the same part over and over again... I much more enjoyed Angie in Salt.... Johnny as Dillinger... but you be your own judge..

Due Date: okay what was Robert Downy Jr doing in this movie? I like Zach what is name from the Hangover but again he seemed to be playing the same role again... and Robert? wow his ability as an accomplished actor was so evident it was almost embarassing... basically it was Train Planes and Automobiles without the train and the plane...

Inspector Bellamy: okay I keep falling asleep on this one but its a french thriller w/ Gerard Depardieu as the inspector wow he's gone totally Marlon Brando and gotten huge! the actress that portrays his wife is absolutely lovely... stay tuned for an update!

OMG, it's so much better than Colin Firth! Thanks, Skor. (I also fixed the video, hope you don't mind) I see you're on your old computer.  :D Lovely, brings back memories of our late night exchanges on the BB. Good old times, eh?

Ok, on the subject of the thread. Highly recommend "In China They Eat Dogs", black comedy, I think it's Dutch.  Filmed with complete seriousness, Grand-Guingole style, hilarious. Quentin Tarantino must be green with envy. Its moral relativism is redeemed by the artistic merit and - the higher power itself!  8)

"Unknown woman" - Italian thriller, the plot is very brutal and overwrought, but the story of a woman's quest is a foolproof way to keep the audience involved until the end.

Last 2 episodes of "Justified" are ridiculous, what for the screenwriters made Raylan's ex to take the money? It's out of character and doesn't make sense at all.

Later, guys, good talking to you.
Flower, what about a story, any story? Come on, you've got hundreds of'em! :-*

Skor, are your kids in Big Sur still on their own? That's exciting for the young and healthy, how are the oldsters and the sick though.  I saw the broken bridge in the news days ago, thought to ask you about your boys and hadn't, sorry. News are troubling all over the world.

Saw first 2hr episode of 'Borgias' on Show. Traditional, no surprises there, but very compressed to satisfy Hollywood standards and hold the audience fleeting attention. Heavily costumed, good looking women, sword fights.

First episode of 'Killing' (AMC) is interesting. The main character, a woman detective is a "red herring", doesn't look very attractive, that makes her believable.
It's already compared with Twin Peaks, in the way how everyone has something to hide, all the secrets I suppose will be gradually revealed. Constant rains of Seattle add some oppressive tension. I will definitely watch that story develop.

Nah, I love it fresh from the editing room, my nightly TV lullabies. Besides the remakes are in vogue (hahaha).

Saw "As It Is In Heaven", Michael Nyqvist from "The Girl" trilogy acting was somewhat irritating. Maybe it was his pockmarked face - I guess Hollywood' beauty on demand corrupted me already.

What a costumed drag so far is "Game of Thrones"! Not a single fresh character, I'd discount a prince dwarf as such. The dialog is bland as porridge, the occasional scenes of sex and blood are painfully predictable, and the whole episode leaves the aftertaste of a stale affair.   But, on the other hand, I couldn't make myself like "True Blood", so what do I know. Just IMHO, as they say.

leeches cast as freedom fighters? hmmmm.... sounds like a neo conservative conspiracy to me! and speaking of which, Madame Nhu died... yeah I know most all you youngsters out there are scratching your heads saying, Madame Who? Not who, Nhu!!  to wit:

Madame Nhu, who as the glamorous official hostess in South Vietnam's presidential palace became a politically powerful and often harshly outspoken figure during the Vietnam War, died on Sunday in Rome, where she had been living. She was believed to be 87.

...to American journalists, diplomats and soldiers caught up in the intrigues of Saigon in the early 1960s, she was "the Dragon Lady," a symbol of everything that was wrong with the American effort to save her country from Communism.

...during (president) Diem's early days in power, she heard that the head of the army, Gen. Nguyen Van Hinh, was bragging that he would overthrow the president and make her his mistress, she confronted him at a Saigon party. "You are never going to overthrow this government because you don't have the guts," Time magazine quoted her as telling the startled general. "And if you do overthrow it, you will never have me because I will claw your throat out first."

In the pivotal year of 1963, as the war with the North worsened, discontent among the South's Buddhist majority over official corruption and failed land reform efforts fueled protests that culminated in the public self-immolations of several Buddhist monks. Shocking images of the fiery suicides raised the pressure on Diem, as did Madame Nhu's well-publicized reaction. She referred to the suicides as "barbecues" and told reporters, "Let them burn and we shall clap our hands."

When Diem, who was notoriously prudish, once questioned the modesty of Madame Nhu's low-cut dress, she was said to have snapped back: "It's not your neck that sticks out, it's mine. So shut up."

That fall, (1963) Madame Nhu went on an American speaking tour, criticizing Diem's critics as soft on communism. She was in Los Angeles on Nov. 1 when news flashed that Diem and her husband had been shot to death in a coup. "The deaths were murders," she told reporters, "either with the official or unofficial blessing of the American government."

keep in mind that 21 days later the President of the United States was also assassinated... and then the fun really started... hey just cause I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're really not after me!

Peace and Stay Free!

My daughter's been in Vietnam for nearly 4 months now. Her visa got screwed p and she had to leave for a week. She went to Thailand, apparently she appeals to something in the Thai psyche, she had two proposals in a week! Anyhow, now she s back in Bac Can, I asked her what the Vietnamese have to say about Americans and she said, "Oh, America is not even o their radar, they are concerned with eloping their own country, their own way," Of course she is only speaking from a very limited experience, interacting primarily with rural villagers, still, something to think about. We are so wrapped up in our country's dramas, but the rest of the world just goes along, taking it day by day. The population where she is is very young, the war is in memory to many, but not on a daily basis. I asked her what called the Vietnam War. She said, "The American War." Of course.
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II

wow! very cool skor! yes the Vietnamese break down their wars as the Japanese War the French War and the American War and they pretty much won them all... yesterday at work I was giving a lecture LOL! on Madame Nhu and Vietnam in general and likened the Madame as the "Sarah Palin of South Vietnam circa 1960-1963" that got them going alright! didn't I just read that Dylan performed in Vietnam?  I also read where the Madame had been kept prisoner by the Communists for several years as a young woman during the 50s i think it was which i am sure helped form some of her more radical opinions on how the "American war" should've been conducted....

and in more bad news Phoebe Snow has also passed on to the great beyond at age 58 of complications from a brain hemorrhage she suffered in January 2010.

and one more: The mother of boxing champ Micky Ward, age 79, portrayed by Oscar-winner Melissa Leo in "The Fighter," died Wednesday in Boston, The Lowell Sun reported. and by the way this is probably the only film about boxing that could almost be classified as a "chick flick" LOL! but lots of eye candy for the guys in the personage of Amy Adams whew! can those shorts she's wearing while tending bar get any lower, shorter or tighter!??

Dylan played in Ho Chi Minh City, my daughter is 4 hours north of Hanoi, in  Bac Kan. It's very different in the north. Somewhat grim and not many visitors. She is the only westerner. Up there the average income is less than a dollar a day. Not may concerts, though she gets into Hanoi , where things are infinitely different. Hanoi sounds like a lovely city, I hope I get there one day. In Bac Kan they just adore Lionel Richie, he's the big winner at the karaoke bars.
Well now it's time to put together a list of books/films for the summer. I know if I scroll through here I cam find plenty, I am just too lazy right now. So if you and Sven and perhaps there are others here- Zen?- have any suggestions, I will write them down now.I'm looking for 5-10 (or more) each, good books and movies. Multiple thanks.

Okay Skor you asked for it:

Films:

1. The Fighter: as i've said before, the only boxing movie i've ever seen that could possibly be classified as a "chick flick"; the ladies will enjoy Marky Mark's muscles while the guys will thoroughly enjoy Amy Adams in her short shorts whew!!
2. King's Speech: even i was surprised at how much i enjoyed this film
3. Monsters: don't let the title mislead you; a really good film and again maybe the only sci-fi film that could be classified as a "chick flick' (with all due respect)
4. Salt: a slam bang action packed spy thriller with Angelina
5. Fair Game: Sean Penn & Naomi Watts: the true story of how the USG pulled the covers on its own spy... a little talky for my taste but well done and Naomi is such a sweetheart!
6. The Tourist: Johnny Depp and Angelina; not bad but couldn't understand what all the excitement was about over this film; Angelina is of course lovely
7. Killer Instinct: a french film based on a true story: it has been called the french Scarface and/or Goodfellas
8. Inspector Bellamy: with Gerard Depardieu a murder mystery of sorts in French
that's it i was going for ten but can't think of anymore! LOL!

Books:

Life by Keith Richards: excellent! a huge book should keep you occupied for awhile should you choose to read this; I honestly thought it was gonna be one drug/sex orgy to the next but its not like that at all... a really good read and love the way Keef doesn't take himself all that seriously... He admits: Yep I was heroin addict and enjoyed every minute of it!  8)

To be honest, Skor,  I can't remember anything else besides all that we talked about here, on this thread. Lately I read mostly poetry and pulp fiction.

Just bought J.C. Oates "We Were The Mulvaneus", (library book-sale), hadn't opened it yet.  Don't know if I mentioned earlier a book I liked very much, "The Debba", by Avner Mandelman - about myths, old and modern, the land of history and much blood - Israel, and about dear to me theater art.  Tightly woven plot with surprising twists, I hope you'd enjoy it.

Stay around, OK?

I'll be here more now. I have not been reading much. Taki bought me an ipad and I thought that would be great, but I'm really not crazy about it. I like my laptop and real books. I might try the Kindle at some point, they are so cheap now. But I like everything about real books and very little about ebooks. Only thing is I can't carry much these days.
I watched a few TV series on Netflix. Yes, I did like "Eli Stone" and I am sorry it was yanked so quickly. I've gotten through most of the Oscar contenders. I really enjoyed "The Kids Are Alright." Not a fan of "Black Swan." I don't remember when I was last here or what I posted and since I am horrendously lazy and am not going back to check,  I run the risk of repeating myself and blathering on.
There are so many things I want to do this summer, but I really don't know what will be practical. We'll see, it all depends on how Taki is feeling and what is possible.
What I really, really want to see is Werner Herzog's film about the caves in France.
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on May 02, 2011, 01:30:51 AM
As I recently watched "Black Swan", I was terrified by the supposedly "flawless" choice of our "Academy" - or what are they called, those people that give away Oscars? Why in hell Natalie Portman got an Oscar - for that constant tearful grimace and neurotically quivering lips? Very unpleasant to watch the same  face as a frozen mask of a "hunted prey", she could've effected a smile at least once, but no, siree, she's suffering through the whole 2 hours! (It felt like three hours, really!)
One of the worst performances ever IMHO.

I saw "The Kids Are Alright". Not as much about a lesbian couple, and notably there's no hint of stigmatizing it or treating it with some romantic reverie, "Brokeback Mountain" style. What I saw was quite a mundane marriage, a casual affair, empty nesters and leaving home grown children. Everything is like in a Chekhov play. It makes the right statement, no more exaltation or "gnashing of teeth" over a way of life that was a taboo not so long ago. I thought it was a good movie if a little dispirited at times. Annette Bening wears wrinkles of old age with dignity.

Saw Sam Shepard "Curse of the Starving Class", there was a LIVE sheep on the stage and the leading actor made an omelet with bacon right there on stage! The sheep looked so cuddly. :) No, seriously, even including this "superrealism" the performance was good. There were no more than 20 people in the audience, most of them friends and relatives of the actors. Pity. I admire  the enthusiasm of the thespians, there is love that doesn't seek a reward, pure as it can be.

Skor, I too stay away from e-books for now, besides what Amazon offers for free isn't worth the time. I installed for myself only Kindle for PC, don't use it though. You should make plans for the summer, it is the best time of year, then you'd change those plans, why not! For example, I'm going to Peru! (NOT!) 8)

Skor, I started "The Man from Beijing" by Mankell, of Wallander fame, and got stuck on the tenth page. I don't know why reading about  frozen Scandinavia now, in the middle of long awaited and still cold and gloomy spring gives me goose bumps.

I'm grading. About two thirds of the way through. It will be a relief to slog through the last of them. Spent the last two nights in Belmont. Taki had to go get tests at Mass General. He's lost a huge amount of weight recently and I was very worried. His blood tests were off as well. But thankfully, the cancer has not returned. I just wish he felt better. Food still goes right through him. It makes life rather difficult, but we manage.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I did see most of the the films you suggested, Ocean, though I haven't gotten to "The Fighter" yet. I'm with you about "B;ack Swan", Sven. I did not like it at all. Very melodramatic and cheesy. "Kids are Alright" was much more satisfying, but I do wish they had come up with a more creative ending. I've been watching "The Killing", the American version, I'm all caught up now, waiting or the next episode. I really like it. I bought some green garlic, leeks and potatoes, to make this:

No trace of cancer is great news, Skor, hope Taki has many more years ahead. How's your grading, done?
Now you've got no excuses - make plans, go places! I wish to go to Vancouver, although that rainy weather scares me; I assume it's rainy there, like in Seattle.

"Killing" is a stylish show, though the prolonged attention to the suffering of the parents seems excessive at times.
Finished "The Man from Beijing", it falls prey to the thriller genre and primitive tying up the ends ruined it for me.  The memoir part was very interesting.

@skor: thanks for asking; well the derma doc cut it out as i said and they are doing a pathology on it just to make sure there isn't something else lurking below the basal type skin cancer which isn't that big of a deal so i'm told... the skin cancer was this little thing on my upper arm that looked like a pimple that never came of age but you should see the hunk of flesh the doc took... wasn't expecting it to be that big...    :-*

@sven: vancouver eh? hey i lived in Oregon for awhile and all it did was rain all day every day drove me nuts I moved back to So Cal in less than 3 mos I was never so glad to see the sun!   ;D

I was only in Vancouver once, but I loved the cosmopolitan feel of the city. And it was quite beautiful there. The rainy dampness of the NW coast can be daunting. My year in far northern CA left me longing for summer's warmth. It would be a fine place to visit, Sven, in the summer, why not? I have no idea what I am going to do in these next weeks. I am restless and longing for adventure. I'll wander in my own mind, I suppose.

Come on, Skor, love of mine, I am sure you'd travel somewhere - with your Mom and sister, to visit with your boys! A mind can take one anywhere in the world and in any known time, it''s just keeping your eyes closed to the same tired view in the window gets difficult in summer, doesn't it?
As to my trip to Vancouver - after your both had confirmed my suspicions - thanks, bit no, thanks! (Oh, gosh, Madam Palin again, please! ::)

wow! Just saw Let Me In last night...what an excellent flick! looks like Hammer films is making a come back with "horror" films now but not of the Frankenstein Dracula Mummy Wolf Man type like they did in the old days... so far the two I've seen the first entitled The Resident w/ Hillary Swank and now this are vastly superior to what passes for "horror" these days (some nut slashing co-eds up into hamburger patties is not my idea of true horror... far from it) any how Let Me In is based on a Swedish novel and screenplay called Let the Right One In... storyline: 12 year old bullied boy meets and hooks up w/ his new next door neighbor loner Abby played by Chloë Grace Moretz... mark my words this little girl is gonna own H'wood as she matures...  so get this up on your Netflix que and fasten your seat belt it's one hell of a ride!!

Abby: You have to hit back.
Owen: I can't. There's 3 of them.
Abby: Then you hit back even harder

the best advice from a vampire i ever heard!!  :P

I'm not very mobile these days. It sucks. I thought I might have surgery this summer, but I'm now thinking I will have to wait a year. I have new insurance and even though it costs just about one 50% of my take home pay, it has a very high deductible and all kinds of hoops and hurdles. I haven't even had the MRI yet, so no definitive action plan. I just know it hurts like hell when I try to walk. So I am getting fatter and fatter, crabby and depressed and not my usual charming self, lol. Anyhow, I appreciate all the suggestions for movies, books, etc. I am watching lots of Netflix instants,, most are mediocre at best. I really liked The Kingdom, the Danish series by Lars Von Trier. I may have posted that here already, can't remember. Anyhow, worth watching. I'm reading Henry Miller's "The Air-conditioned Nightmare." I've picked it up and put it down several times, finally getting into it.

FLOWER, the vampire flick is a Hollywood remake of the Scandinavian "Let The Right One In" which we  talked about here. Is it better than the original?

SKOR, I'm sorry you got the short end of the stick with the insurance, though maybe you shouldn't postpone the operation if the pain is so bad! Read the fine print, all the riders, and talk to the insurance rep, there might be some better solution than just waiting.

"The Kingdom" :o, oh, no, a cancerous liver as a trophy - that's too much. By the way, isn't Von Trier the guy who got kicked out of Cannes for "understanding" Hitler?  His new - "Melancholy" - thanks, I've got enough of my own!

I'll look in my Netflix queue for you.
As Flower said - hang in there!

@ sven did we? oy! i'm losing my short term memories! i'll have to see the original first to make that verdict but the american version is definitely a keeper! I also viewed All Good Things w/ Ryan Gosling Kristen Dunst and Frank Langella based on the true story of the most notorious unsolved murder case in New York which means the rich can get away with murder... Dunst is excellent in this film she portrays such a depressed coked out wife that after awhile i didn't even recognize her... Gosling as the psycho husband also excellent... and Frank his usual par excellence acting as expected...

@skor yep same thing happens to me: they take a chunk out of my paycheck then the co-pay and then i still get these hugh medical bills

You know, Flower, how warriors decorate their bodies and faces with scars - to show their power over enemies? You beat one, so wear the badge! Congrats!

Skor, I recently watched "Biutiful". There are darkest of dark - unredeemed deaths, miserable poverty and painful illness and still - it's a movie I'd recommend as a remedy against despair. Maybe for the beautiful picture of the next world (or afterlife), maybe for the inherent decency of the main character, maybe for the kids that are our own immortality, don't know.

Other one (mentioned here already, I think) is "Stone" - E.Norton, Milla Jovovich and Robert De Niro.
Last night "Taking Woodstock" came on the TV, and I ended watching it again all the way thru the end. Those were the times! :)

Looked at my Netflix queue, couldn't find anything that I hadn't sent you previously, sorry. A lot of the movies are not on DVD yet. Hope you're feeling better, at least for the hot and sunny weather. Will it last is another question!

I'm working my way through the Dogme 95 films.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95)
It's amazing how much Danish I am recapturing just by watching the films.
Speaking of Danish, this year was the thirty third year I have talked to my ex boyfriend on my birthday, he has not missed one year. He has remained a bachelor farmer way up on the northwest coast of Jutland where the trees are bent from the constant winding blowing in from the North Sea. Anyhow, his farm is powered entirely by that wind, and so is his entire village. We are n the stone age when it comes to renewable energy.
Other than the often bleak Scandinavian films I went and saw "Water for Elephants." Girls night out at the theater that serves wine! I had read the book, which I loved, and while the movie was a less complex version of the story, it was excellent. Beautifully filmed. I have the feeling that I may have posted that on here already. That happens to me, I forget what I poste where and when, sorry.
Thanks for the recommendations, Sven. How the hell are you, anyhow?

Don't be silly these are genuine concerns.. okay I'm still confused.. if you don't have bennies what about this health care thing? or social security disability? medicare? i'm not too hip when it comes to these things and i should be considering my age but i'd give social security disability a try if they say no keep trying; a doctor once told me it takes three tries and he was right on the third try i got approved.. you can do it online too... back in my day i had to fill out10,000 forms and mail them in and wait and wait and wait... so hang in there! we love you!   :-*

Oh I have private health insurance, it costs over a third of my take home pay, but I have it. The reason I have to wait is because I may be a candidate for an alternative treatment. It's OK. I am going to PT, chiropractor and taking NSAIDs, so I will get through. My ood has lifted since I wrote that, some days are tough, that's all.

It was 4 years ago today that JFC first aired!

Not usually being bloodthirsty I got to agree, Flower, when I've read that United Healthcare paid its CEO $102 million in compensation last year. Just for one year, isn't it a sweet deal! The premiums were increased by 16-19%, it's happening everywhere, the same with co-pays.

Is anyone going to watch "Falling Skies"?  One more dystopia/survivalist boot camp/frontier show. The aliens look kinda like in Mr.Shyamalan  "Signs", but I'll give it a try.

I saw "X-men First Class" over the weekend - clean, well composed fun, lots of fresh faces, I enjoyed it.

Hey, Flower, have you been watching "Game of Thrones"? I got to admit it grew on me, there are some interesting characters (the dwarf and the tomboy princess for one),  though if not the slowly revealed threat of the imminent attack from some strange malevolent phenomena and the presence of mystical elements (the cutest baby dragons, really!) I would've lost interest, as the court intrigues are very boring in themselves, murder and mayhem for just a few years in power.  I will wait for the second season.

There is a remake of "Teen Wolf" on MTV, some say it's interesting. "Weeds" coming up soon, then "Breaking Bad". Anyone can recommend  good new TV shows, please?

No I haven't Sven haven't been watching much tv at all... mostly flicks from redbox and netflix... i'll give it a try just saw Kill the Irishman very good gangster flick check it out!
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on June 24, 2011, 02:42:45 PM
Hi, Flower, my one and only companion on these pages! "Kill the Irishman" is in my queue, under "long wait" freaking category. Waited almost two months for "Fighter", they finally sent a DVD that was scratched so bad, it skipped through the quarter of the film. I saw couple places I know in Lowell, where it was shot, remember seeing them on the way to or from the local theater to which we hold season tickets. I was told Mike Ward can be seen there in bars - redhead shorty.
The style of pseudo-documentary is wonderful, Christian Bale deserved two Oscars for the portrayal of Dicky in my opinion, should've gotten one more, the Portman's!

Am waiting for "Bloodworth" next, hopefully soon.  I got curious about the "Sundance" favorite "Martha Marcy May Marlene" with John Hawke (Sol Star in "Deadwood") as a cult leader, it will be shown in October.
Saw "Super 8" - such a regurgitated stuff, lots of boom-booms and CG effects, all to build the tension that results in absolute nothing - a ridiculous scarecrow of an alien. Worshiping your childhood idols - in this case it's Spielberg and ET - never ends well!

Although summer, even with its dreary rain for days is better than anything on the screen! See you there, wherever you are - get away from your cubicle!

Head body head!  :D some interesting dynamics behind that film per an article i read in Mens Journal basically Dicky kinda ripped Micky off a little on the story & the movie rights... plus somewhere in there between the filming and the release of the production Dicky got busted for manslaughter... there was a barroom brawl some fists were thrown and some guy went down for the final count.. turns out his 20 something year old nephew took the fall for that... wow that's a shame about the condition of the disc i hope netflix gave you a freebie behind that! Lowell huh? being the home of Jack Kerouac who then lived in my hometown of Northport during the early 60s where i got to drink beer once with the King of the Beatniks... connections babe connections!! I was looking at redbox yesterday sheesh what crap! I use netflix for all the foreign flicks and old flicks you can't get anywhere else... this weekend Get Carter with Michael Caine circa 1971... also have Mesrine Pt 2 qued up .... Kill the Irishman is good well worth the wait... my man Vincent D'Onofrio has still got it! last weekend of OT & project ends  June 30 so i may get to go outside again sometime soon! but i got my eyes set on San Francisco this July so its all worth it
Shaka! Peace and Stay Free!!  :-*

Hey where'd everybody go?? anybody alive out there?? now I'm reading Let the Right One In and only a few pages into the book and I'm already memerized by it... and it never fails... I reserved two books from the interlibrary loan system and of course they both come in at the same time! older books one being the bio of Keith Richards by Victor Bockris and having just read Keef's own memoir it is of course familiar territory but Bockris uses a lot of quotes from all the major players and then some so that makes it all the more interesting; the second which i find much more interesting is Robert Greenfield's book covering the Rolling Stones 1972 STP Tour which is written in a kind of Tom Wolfe/Hunter S Thompson style... jesus how'd i miss that? oh yeah i was bumming around the country then... wound up sitting on the nudie beach in Santa Barbara with this little artist girl i met that's how i missed that! sigh! for god's sake somebody tune in let me know you're alive eh??  ;)

July 2: wow saw two flicks on Friday one good one excellent! As part of a prize our team won for meeting over 98% service levels we all got to go to the movies courtesy of the company... I'm dumb as a fox I guess and picked Friday to go see Bad Teacher with a few workmates and my Director who of course is young enough to be my daughter.. nevertheless Cameron Diaz plays the part very well but I'd wait til it comes out on DVD... yep cursing crude sexual jokes bare titties drug use and the car washing scene alone is worth the price of admission! (Well for a overly sexed senior citizen like myself anyway!) OK now the serious stuff: Barney's Version which is on DVD at Redbox... what a film... Paul Giamatti is absolutely excellent and Bruce Greenwood has a small part as well... I'm almost ashamed to say I saw myself in Paul's character "Barney" Dustin Hoffman puts in a great performance as well... all in all three thumbs up! OK now where the hell is everybody!!??   ::)

I don't know, Flower, Cameron Diaz is a good comedy actress, only the trailer shows all the best scenes of" Bad Teacher" I'm afraid.
Saw "Billy Bathhouse", think it's based on Doctorow novel, where Dustin Hoffman plays a mafioso - would his part in LUCK be a reprisal? Saw another one with Hoffman - from 70s or something - "Papillon". Two attempted escapes from a French colonial prison.

After you see few hundred movies, when a lake or a waterfall appear on the screen - wait for a nude scene - that was about Billy Bathhouse, - Nicole Kidman plays a version of femme fatale.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th. I spent it all at the ocean.
Sunburn!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Svennie: hmmm I'll wait for that waterfall scene! haven't seen Nicole in the altogether since Eyes Wide Shut whew! BTW pickup on Mao's Last Dancer! wow! excellent film! Bruce Greenwood as the gay ballet director (not that there's anything wrong with that!) Billy Bathouse is this something new??

Bad Teacher: oh believe me there's a few things they couldn't put in the trailers that are worth the watch believe me!

what beach or shouldn't i ask? i spent my weekend at the ghetto white trash piss pool sigh! but July 8 take off for a week and a half in San Francisco! yeah like that!  :-*

Skor, the trailer of Larry Crowne was booooooring! Can't stand neurotic Allen and if you love photography/panoramic shots Tree of Life would be good. i'm gonna "hold you" to that....  :-* okay made it to city lights bookstore for the first time since 1975 i guess they've gone a little commercial but wow have u ever noticed how similiar the logo for city lights is to the JFC logo? blew me away! browsed thru the beat poetry and lit section most of which i already own or have read but darn missed the Naked Women Eating exposition last weekend now that would've been interesting! stumbled across Jack Kerouac alley this time out of sheer exhaustion not b/c i had my pot goggles on like 40 years ago & walked into Vesuvios a great little bar with two floors... i guess i must've been really high last time i was there b/c it seemed huge to me then but its really just a hole in the wall... cozy... i bellied up to the bar and ordered a pepsi on the rocks with a twist... noticing a shot of absinthe was eight bucks... hmmmm.... maybe when i'm diagnosed w/ a life threatening disease i'll come over here and get totally wasted on 26 straight shots of absinthe a la dylan thomas and go to meet my maker totally stoned! i was having the time of my life but unfortunately the people i was with walked thru north beach like they were on a tour of auschwitz! nevertheless they changed the marquee on big al's from a showgirl to al capone and it is now closed having relocated to Kearny street... a few doors down was the Beat Museum... i walked in and it was 5 dollar admission to the actual museum... so i gotta pay five bucks to see the life i arleady lived? no thanks! browsed the old paperbacks all of which i once owned and bought for a quarter or thirty five cents when i was an aspiring beatnik and are now worth hundreds of dollars!! well to a collector anyway...  i found something out about myself on this trip... I guess i'm a city boy at heart... oh sure in the late 60s early 70s i was into this back to the land stuff and i did finally wind up doing that owned chickens and a goat and a horse and planted a huge garden and primed a well and all of that and it was damn hard work! but deep down inside i'm city thru and thru... i get off on the grunge and the weirdos and the panhandlers and the hustlers and the woman at the end of the bar nursing a drink talking into the air or the young girl on the 2nd floor with her feet propped up on a chair with a bemused smile on her face reading a book of poetry.. i dig the crowds and the young italian girls on grant street greeting you with a jolly bonjourno trying to lure you into their restaurant for dinner i dig the sex shops and theatres advertising totally topless girls 24 hrs a day... i dig the marijuana grow shop right across the street from washington square park with the statue of benjamin franklin that was on the cover of Trout Fishing in America.. i dig the crowded streets in Chinatown with these five old chinese guys playing traditional instruments like they were the Chinese Grateful Dead... i dig it all.. bring it on.... i got pavement running in these veins!  8)

God willing! 8)

Flower, don't be so skimpy - where're all the details, tastes and scents of Paris on Pacific?

Skor, remember Dangrsmind? From S.-F.? Easy to connect if you wish, he still uses the same handle, I got nostalgic and Googled him.
Oh, what's sexy in the library you visit? Patrons, or the book collection, or a steepled roof? ???
Mine is all matronly, with the youth and children partitions. There's a fountain, a symbol in itself, although children splashing in the water make it innocent. Well, time for everything.

Any exciting summer recipes?

I have been quiet. Mostly because I am experiencing pain and it sucks. I am not very good at ignoring things that keep me from living as I wish. I will soon have to figure out where/when to have my hip replaced with a fake one, it scares me and makes me feel old.

No good recipes right now, maybe soon.
My favorite novel so far this summer is "The Lacuna" by Barbara Kingsolver. Have you read it? It crosses the mexican/U'S border, bring in Trotsky and fida and Diego and H.U.A.C. and the craft of writing. I loved it. Also liked "The Snowman" by Jo Nesbø. It's a big, dark, complex and quite scary Norwegian detective novels. One worth reading, not exactly like Stieg Larsson's work, but engrossing.

@skor: it really has nothing to do with age; case in point: Fourth of July weekend 1965 I failed to negoitiate Dead Man's Curve at a high rate of speed on wet pavement lost control of the 59 Dodge I was driving crossed the lane just barely missing a head on collision hit a huge tree bounced off the tree went thru a fence and almost wound up in someone's living room... my buddy in the back seat got thrown from the car upon impact, he was maybe 16 years of age at the time.. on the way out ripped his hip on the back door wall after the car door had flung open... result? hip replacement sometime in his 20s after developing arthiritis in the bone... shit happens sistah!  so don't feel so old it can happen at any age..  ;)

Sorry, y'all, or guys, "I've been remiss".

Skor, you poor kid, pains come in many disguises, not the reason being celebratory about, take whatever lessens the hurt, be it silence or a double dose of a painkiller!

I finally (like 30years too late :-[) saw The Graduate - OMG, what an outdated family dynamic - THEY (parents) forced the girl to marry?!?
Saw Lawn Dogs, reminded me of American Beauty's bitter sarcasm, and I loved the fairy tale framing.
Got The Fifth Woman by Mankell ( Wallander series author) from the library, didn't open it yet.

Not watching a lot - Breaking Bad, Weeds and with some disbelief at myself, the second season of Haven, with Emily Rose. Watched The Gates, for Chandra West, but it was beyond stupid, ridiculous. Maybe will give Teen Wolf a try, though it's perilously close to the Twilight lore.

Flower, so - where's your S.-F. travelogue? C'mon!

@sven: i have been hand writing my "memoirs" of the trip in a journal so as to not forget everything: however hard to believe that just yesterday 08/11/11 marked one month ago discovering Sausalito... what i wouldn't do to be sitting on the back deck of that little Italian restaurant overlooking the ferry slip gazing across the bay to watch the San Francisco city lights blinking on at dusk... today a month ago i was sitting in my brother's van nursing an infected tooth while the rest of the group were in a greenhouse buying wholesale orchids... the van was parked in front of a small wooden shack that advertised teak wood items open on weekends only naturally.. a huge sitting stone Buddha guarded the front entrance... it was foggy misty cold and i didn't feel so good right then but got out of the van walked over and touched the Buddha on his shoulder.. solid and strong... somone had lain a brilliant purple colored flower in the Buddha's upturned hand in a pose of meditation... I walked back to the van got in shivering... and was so spaced out forgot to take a pic of the great Buddha... next year I will be the one who lays the flower in the Buddha's hand....

and now onto more weighty matters: in an article in the most recent issure of Surfing magazine JFC is named as one of the prime slanderers of surfing! WTF! don't worry... this weekend i am writing a letter lambasting this little punk ass son of a bitch whoever he is... any insights or opinions anyone might want to contribute to my planned rant would be cheerfully accepted... Oh sven you're my biggest fan! JUmping ahead to the last night in Cali my brother his wife and I drove over to China Stix in Santa Clara for some take out... the egg foo young omelets there are as big as your head! delish too! Of course there is a heavy Asian influence in this entire area & thru my travels around I was beginning to notice these altars set up near the door ways of every shop or restaurant I entered... some huge and ornate while others were quite modest... for example at the Old Shanghai gift shop on Grant Ave in Chinatown there sat a huge meditating Buddha at the entrance with a great sand filled bowl sitting in front of him where dozens of burned out joss sticks stood up... the Buddha himself was adorned with dollar bills and change of all sorts... at the Asian super market in Milpitas there was a standing Buddha and at his feet stood these neat little pyramids made of apples and oranges... and so at China Stix I noticed behind the counter a small Buddha statue adorned with browning bananas... finally my curiousity got the best of me and I asked the man taking orders what all this meant and basically it is an old tradition to have the Buddha near the doorway of your place of business or home and even the gateway into a village where joss sticks are burned and offerings are made for good luck and wealth.. and as the man explained with a giggle and a shrug, "we offer fruit and vegetables because most of the gods and goddesses are vegetarian"... "Everyday?" I asked as we both glanced at the browning bananas and he shrugged giggling again, "Oh not everday but everyday would be good!"

hey is that Confucious or however you spell dat! Just as a quick aside... in the local Asian market here in NC i observed the stock guys stacking the shelves with these beautiful tins of all sizes... did a little investigating & inside the tins are what is called Moon Cakes.. some of the larger tins are like $30 a pop and upwards... the smaller ones like $16... yeah pricey... i think what you are really paying for is the ornately decorated tin... anyway come to find out that Sept 12 is the annual celebration of the Moon Goddess of Immortality and part of that celebration is eating Moon Cakes with tea of course! there are actually recipes for moon cakes online with one of the ingredients being "salted duck eggs"!! so do you salt the duck before it lays the eggs or what? LOL! anyway today is payday so i may spring for some of these moon cakes... the Chinese call this a "mid autumn celebration" but according to my round eye calendar its still summer right?? are the seasons reversed in Asia like Australia or what? for example there's a Spring festival at the end of the round eye calendar month of January and beginning of February... sheesh shoulda paid more attention in geography instead of trying to look up that cheerleader's mini skirt huh?   :-*

@skor: good for you! and i don't know if this qualifies as a hit or a miss but last week went to the doctor and he took blood to run some tests... the usual stuff... so Friday afternoon i go to pick up some scripts and instead of two scripts there are three... and i ask the pharmacist what this third one is and he looks at me like i'm a fucking idiot and says That's your thyroid medicine... oh really! first i heard of it... so i pays me money and gets on the customer service phone... it's 10 minutes of five on Friday and man i need to talk someone.. anyway long story short the nurse says, Well Mr Oceanflower your thyroid is failing... normal range in .035 to .040 and mine ticked in at .058... its a weird scale causer the higher the number the lower your thyroid is working.... which probably attributes to the fact that i've gained 15 lbs in the last six months, feel tired and sore most of the time... cranky and unable to concentrate properly which also might account for some of the stupid careless mistakes i've been making at work... at any rate i'm taking something called levothyroxin at a very low dosage 0.05 mgs... and this morning when i woke up i didn't feel like Dracula rising from his coffin.. and the beat goes on! what a drag it is getting old!   :P

Glad to hear you are feeling better, Ocean. Hope it works out for you. After I had the massage work I went to Esalen for a day and soaked in the mineral springs. Have you ever been there?http://www.esalen.org/place/hot_springs.html (http://www.esalen.org/place/hot_springs.html)
Then I had a second massge shortly before flying home. My body feels better than it has in ages. I have a headache, though, this humidity and pressure is intense, they say a hurricane is coming, I hope it dwindles down to nothing, we do not need a major storm anywhere right now.

Hello Everyone!

Just wanted to tell you that I am 1 mile from the ocean on the Jersey Shore and just on the edge of the storm serge area.  The town of Spring Lake, just east of me, is under mandatory evacuation but since our house is 1.2 blocks from there we can stay... don't know if that's good or not  :-\

I found this app online that shows the projected course over Google Map and you can add or subtract different criteria.   Pretty interesting stuff...   http://crisislanding.appspot.com/ (http://crisislanding.appspot.com/)  I'm in zip 07762

Hope everyone stays safe today!

We are fine, no power loss even, just some pine branches on the lawn.

We went to the Second Story Theater on Thursday and I was going to leave a greeting card on your doorstep, but it was too dark and we couldn't find the house!  :-[

Got power back last night-whew! Just in time to start classes today, on Thurs I have 3 2 hour classes, back to back with no break. As I write this I am a limp rag, I'll get used to it soon. Lots of cleaning up to do, but no major damage. My dad lost water and it came back on with such force it broke his pipes, that is taken care of now so we put the pieces together and continue on.

Sven- you are too cruel! One day I will catch you here, throw you over my shoulder and take you to eat oysters. Just you wait! I just can believe you would not invite me to go to the theater with you-that would be FUN!

Oh, Skor, that's a lot of spoiled food, and life in candlelight and probably more inconveniences,  but thank God you weren't washed out into the ocean or into a wild and muddy river!
We here didn't even sneeze! Next time it'll get us, for sure!

As to the theater - I thought I saw you in the lobby! (I don't see too good, though!) To top it - the play was about Maria Callas,  how do you like that? Sorry, couldn't stop myself, I know it's cruel...... :-*

Just saw "Barney's Version" - didn't expect it to turn out so well. What a good real love story and great acting and a little bonus - Dustin Hoffman and Bruce Greenwood in supporting roles.

I'm with you on all that, Flower.

Thought to mention a movie you might enjoy, bittersweet like all trips down memory lane, The Music Never Stopped. Did you get to see it?

Read somewhere that Mr. Milch and Mr. Mann are not on the best terms, someone called Milch "embattled". Gave me pause, what if "Luck" turns out to one season show like JFC?

I'm still working on my Danish, with a few Swedish and Norwegian films thrown in to keep me on my toes. The last one I watched was, "A Somewhat Gentle Man"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1386683/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1386683/)
I thought it was very good. But then I like those bleak landscapes and dark, subtle humor.

Hi, Skor, being a night owl, I just saw your post and corrected the link that didn't work.
This is one of unpleasant and depressing movies, sorry for the comment, I didn't get past first few  scenes, so maybe I should stay silent.

I can't watch even something like "Never Let me Go" - these ideas are macabre and dehumanizing in my opinion, so sometimes reviews are all I do!
How are you - long time no see! How's school?

The Scandinavian films are often bleak, sometimes their is a flicker of redemption, sometimes not. I enjoy them, the darkly humorous and the humorless alike. "In a Better World" just arrived, I am looking forward to that one.
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on September 26, 2011, 11:09:59 PM
"Memory of a Killer" - a good story, I think it's Belgian, not Scandinavian, but bleak alright.
Saw "Saint Ralph", a second cousin  of "Billy Elliot", some hilarious coming of age tidbits, with a soft religious aspect.

No time to speak of Weeds season, or Boardwalk Empire, or Breaking Bad. Is anyone watching those? Opinions?

In A Better World was excellent... great flick! and as soon as I lose a few more pounds (lost seven per doctor yesteray) I'm stealing the main male character's look... white jacket with black crew shirt...

hey ya gotta see Hesher.. a very strange indie movie with Joseph Gordon What? from 3rd Rock, Natalie Portman, and Piper Laurie who is so old now i didn't even recognize her...

sorry its the playoffs now only time for Big Bang Mike & Molly that kind of thing... peace and stay free!

Whah?  Flower, you LOST SEVEN  pounds in ONE day??!!! OMG, you'll make millions, let me market your diet for just one percent, eh? :D :D :D :D :D
You'd look dashing in a white jacket, Flower, extra pounds or not, Miami Vice style.
Glad you're OK.

"In a Better World" is at the top of my queue, as to Big Bang Mike and Molly - who the heck are those characters?

Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II

I loved and adored "In a Better World." Then I watched "Brothers" also Susanne Bier, and after watching the Danish version I watched the American remake. It was as if they had erased all of the shadows.
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: OceanFlower on October 02, 2011, 10:25:45 AM
@sven: very funny! no it took me alot longer than one day to lose that 7 lbs believe me! with the low functioning thyroid its even more of an uphill battle... once you see the flick you'll see what i mean... when the dad walks into the garage to confront the mechanic he's wearing at crew style black shirt w/ either a white or cream colored jacket but not Miami Vice style.... you'll see... c'mon Sven you're scaring me The Big Bang Theory and the show Mike & Molly... the actress who portrays Molly just won an Emmy for her performance and i hear she's an absolute riot in Bridesmaids... M&M Monday night at 930PM right before Hawaii 5-0... Big Bang thursday 8pm....

@Skor: ok now i got watch Brothers... of course now that it's October i'll be on a monster movie kick all month!

oh BTW i finally broke down at got The American with George Clooney... I don't see why this flick was considered a bomb? first of all its shot on location in Italy... beautiful country.... George plays it very cool and laid back... I guess Joe and Jane Six Pak didn't like it because there weren't any explosions only one car chase scene not too much shooting... and gee you might actually have to have a brain to follow the story line!! but in my own humble opinion this may be the reality of how an actual hired assassin might live
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on October 03, 2011, 11:45:40 PM
May I suggest for you a Hawaiian shirt with green and pink stripes to go with the white jacket then,  my dear Flower?  :P

Sorry, I don't watch neither 5-0, nor Mike and Molly, although the latter seems interesting. Got to tell you, 2 hrs spent on Bridesmaids were some of the worst ever. I find most of Apatov's creations not funny at all and at times mildly disgusting. So is Kristen Wiig, the Braidsmaids main character, she simply can't act I think.

Saw the first episode of "Terra Nova" - Jurassic Park deja vu and the opening of "Homeland" on Show, some completely unbelievable details made me doubt it is worthwhile.

Other than that - life as usual, the autumn is advancing, leaves turning, air cooling, etc. My young dog is wild with excitement, too bad he can't run freely in fields and meadows, only walk on the leash in a city park.

Yeah, Ocean, I really loved, "In a Better World", maybe one of my all time favorite movies. After that I watched "Brothers", the Susanne Bier version followed by the American version. The Danish version was so very much better, nuance instead of sledgehammer, but Jake Gyllenhaal was terrific in the remake. Then last night I watched "The Celebration", it came highly recommended but it was just too emotional for me, some parts were great other were simply too intense with screaming and all, the tirelessly dysfunctional family. Now I am back to "After the Wedding" and I am quite certain I will love this one. I've got enough Danish films lined up to last for awhile.

@sven: couldn't disagree with you more on Bridesmaids I LOVED IT! whenever i see "best comdy" "hilarious" etc on the cover i usually wind up sitting there stoned face for 90 mins... but not this time! c'mon the tennis match w/ AC/DC playing? the bathroom scene? the opening scenes at the bf's house? i guess i'm just easily amused! not to mention the two girls making out on the plane? this was like the female "Hangover"!! three thumbs up!!

also ya gotta watch 5-0 at least once... where else can you see a skinny asian chick take out a meth enraged biker bearing down on her at full speed on chopper with just a simple roundhouse kick dressed in nothing but a skimpy bikini???

forgot to mention saw Hanna over the weekend Hanna being played by the girl from Lovely Bones whew! what a flick a 16 year old killing machine but done well.. it's all about revenge! man Cate Blanchette (one of my faves) is a real evil villian in this and made her look almost like a CIA Stepford Wife! I hope they come out with Hanna Part 2! I had to go do some pullups after i saw this! LOL!   :D

Flower, I'm glad you have so much youthful  "frat house" attitude to laugh, but, my friend, bathroom humor never been my favorite. Though, recently I especially enjoyed "Flirting With Disaster" (for the umpteenth time!) and laughed at the first of "Hangovers", so I'm not completely hopeless in this regard.

Got "In a Better World", no one wishes to watch it with me - just a dog, who, I sincerely hope would fall asleep and stop bothering me, at least for a short while.

I'm reading "The Way" a novel about Jesus, who is - surprisingly or not, is portraited as an androgynous heir to the ancient tradition of worshiping Great Mother. You might relate to the idea, Flower, am I correct?

The dog shewed on it, being a hardcover, the library fine would be  $25. Maybe he needed a dose of "enlightenment". :D :D :D :D :D

No, Lily, I still have it in Netflix queue, not sure I myself would appreciate its style, but I'll give it a try.

Saw "Pirate Radio" - did they really have the arrogance to ban rock and roll in England - I can't believe it! Good movie, wonderful cast - every character  has a quirk! and lots of great songs.

Saw "Win-Win" for Giamatti, after watching him in "Barney's Version", and yes, his acting was OK, but what a discovery was an actor who played a young wrestler's part, a real gem. His name is Alex Shaffer, I hope he'll get noticed - he deserves it.

I have directv cinema, you actually get movies before Netflix or the redbox... The best movie I have seen this year, and that was "The Help" I know everyone says  the book was much better, but the way they directed  that movie and how to me it told two stories in one was very good. I see a nod for the Oscar with that movie.

Flower, Lily, OMG, we got ourselves a Garden of Eden!  :D :D :D :D :D

Anyways, Flower, I got the 100 words, cut out the oil bubble - it's too predictable a reference, as to the whole - cute, but you could go for something sharper a little.

Bride Flight, OK, thanks.
Finished a novel "Talk Funny Girl" - not bad, religious twist on child abuse, made me think about "Martha, Marcy", etc, that movie everyone's talking about. Looks like one of Olsen girls can act, not just starve herself or sell merchandise.

Lily, you got a good deal with this directv cinema, is that part of Direct TV?

@Sven: my best and worst critic! LOL! the only excuse i can use is i was trying to beat the same day deadline of 10/20 & keep in mind this is for Surfing magazine and the prize is either a pair of shoes or a tshirt so it wasn't exactly the Nobel Laureate (SP?) I was going for... lets face it the demographic of Surfing mag is mostly likely sexually frustrated angst ridden males from 12-30 with a couple of old farts like myself peppered in... so cute and predictable it is! LOL!

Skor, Flower, Mz.Lily, Trishah, anyone - did any of you read something by D.F.Wallace? Is it readable at all? I'm thinking of getting his "Infinite Jest",  however the sheer number of pages scares me off!

Please, tell me, is it worth opening? A side note - I read through Dostoevsky with ease, but skipped the war in "War and Peace", if that's any indication. So - I would appreciate your opinion! Thanks.

Mz.Lily,  :D :D :D :D :D, you might be right!
Or, as it's supposedly satire or something - could be funny. Hmmm... still, I'd rather read an abridged copy  ::) 8)

huge article on Nathan Fletcher in Surfer mag haven't read it... these guys make their living SURFING so i better not hear any whining about how tough his life is okay?

and speaking of a tough life: The ASP giveth and the ASP taketh away... they gave Kelly Slater the title in San Fran the other day and then had to take it back due to an error in the points awarded with great apologies to Owen Wright how won at Long Beach NY is September beating Kelly by several points: keep in mind that when Kelly won his first title Owen was 1 yr old!!   ;D

I've read several short stories of DFW in the New Yorker, have not attempted "Infinite Jest", but it is getting to be winter, so why not? I read so much this summer, but not mush since then, I watch movies or just play scrabble games online. Today is the short day, it is getting dark, not even 3:30 yet. Oy, another winter is icumen in.

OMG, Skor, you forgot to turn your clock back?!? Sunset is around 4.30 pm now, falling fast though.
At least it's balmy 68 for couple days here!
Yeah, I'll skip Wallace, as I did Pynchon, as I did Martin and many, many more before that and will definitely do after.....

I'm reading "The Inverted Forest" by John Dalton, still on the first pages but it is promising a good story. Some vibes there of Robert Penn Warren, Carson McCullers, etc.
Got down to one Netflix movie a pop as I watch Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland and it's already three nights a week. Can one watch TV every single night? (It's possible, ain't it? :D)

Lately more and more westerns appear on TV and in movies, I've discovered "Hell on Wheels" on AMC - that's been already ridiculed for bad writing, which, IMHO, is not that bad - sure, it's not exclusively literary like Milch's, but good cast, acting and the atmosphere well make up for it.
The main character is a younger version of Brolin, a brooding avenger, there are brothels, preachers, slit throats and - a DEAD INDIAN! Yeah, it brings back memories......

Have no clue about Mailer! I could guess something about Salinger or Williams, yes, I should read more biographical exposé!

Post by: OceanFlower on November 20, 2011, 08:18:25 AM
Mailer liked his whisky and women no doubt but i'm sure he had a few puffs of the evil weed during the sixties... In Tough Guys Don't Dance there's a woman's decapitated head stuffed in a black plastic garbage bag with about a kilo of ganji...I can't remember why tho??  :D

saw Horrible Bosses... kinda has that Hangover feel to it... I thought it would be more like an Office Space kinda flick but not so.... still quite funny and the cameo appearances by some old timers was a pleasant surprise!  and Jennifer Aniston as the nympho dentist was quite amusing!!

One of my favorite lines: I'm coked out of my head and I'll punch who I want! I think I actually said that once!  :P

Bosses are boring, Aniston is in great shape though. I got dozens of movies I'd like to see, but Netflix has no set date for them - what - a year? and then the wait is too freaking long! Amazon Prime is worse, Pay per View costs too much.... :-[

Anyone - any suggestions?

well I saw Super 8 over the weekend with a highly skeptical eye but hey I liked it! The kids are great in this movie and  thoroughly enjoyed it even tho Spielberg produced it... and don't forget to watch the end credits some real surprises there for ya!  :P

@ sven netflix has such a large inventory go for something slightly dated that you haven't seen... which by the way I tried watching the Red Circle a 1970 french crime thriller whew! the sure cure for insomnia! even with Yves Montand!

Ahem, Flower, I grew up on European movies, but the word DATED makes my skin wrinkle! There in the movie you mentioned is also Alain Delon, who used to be the perfect and effeminate star, like Johnny Depp. Why's there two n's in his name though?  :D

On the weekend saw "Tower Heist" and laughed with abandon at some brilliant sparks of dialog.

Netflix brought me "One Fast Move and I'm Gone", the Kerouac documentary. Even with the promise of beautiful Big Sur scenery I couldn't make it through, but maybe it was my attention span more than the film itself. I'll try again.

@skor: wow another kerouac doc? i wasn't aware of that... i'll have to check it out I wonder if they cover his years he lived in my hometown... one of my favorite watering holes in Northport by name of Gunther's advertises itself now as "Jack Kerouac's favorite bar"!! too much!

@sven: well of course you were! and as an absolute film nut I find "foreign movies" vastly superior to just about anything H'wood produces with some rare exceptions! Dubbed flicks are an abomination and should be banned! LOL! Hey did you see where Noomi the girl with the dragon tattoo is in the new Sherlock Holmes flick? i'm really pissed they didn't cast her in the american version of "Girl" she does speak english for god's sake!!

OK feel like I'm talking to myself but here goes anyway: saw Snowflower and the Secret Fan over the weekend... yeah sisterhood is powerful baby! good flick... but it took me halfway thru the movie to figger out that the actresses were playing all four roles... meaning the modern couple and the girls from the late 1800s in China...  ::) then started watching Kundun the life story of the Dalai Lama... couldn't help myself ordered out chinese food... LOL!  :P

Ahem, every man is an island or something, Flower.  8)

I forgot when I read a good, worth a mention, book. "The Art of Fielding" by Chad Harbach is waiting for me at the library - until December 2012 - hahahahahaha! No, seriously, TV is a hungry monster and eat all the time I've got. I try to read back issues of VF that's been piling on my desk for months.  Overdue books incur fines and that can quickly deplete my reader's enthusiasm.

So, please, share with us your reviews, OK?

As you requested: saw Water for Elephants over the weekend... excellent film.. with Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon and goddess bless Hal Halbrook! still working!

also Cowboys and Aliens... i guess i'm easily amused but I greatly enjoyed this film altho some of it is rather predictable... just some fun bang bang shoot em up western sci fi!!

and reading Winter Tale by Mark Helprin (did i already mention this?) anyway i'm about half way thru the book and makes me want to burn every word i've ever written!! LOL!  :P

also reading Barbara Eden's auto-bio Jeannie Out of the Bottle... yes we'll always remember her as Jeannie no doubt but she was in some great flicks and tv shows before and after... turns out Burl Ives was a dirty old man and tried to bed down the young Barbara more than once during the filming of a movie with Tony Randall ironically about a male genie played by Ives... tony of course was a complete gentleman and they tangled only in games of gin rummy...

hey did anyone see Yoko curtsying for the Queen the other week?  8)

Was watching 'Backbeat' - a retro about Beatles' humble beginning, no time to see to the end, but so far it's been good.

Over the ong weekend: Midnight In Paris: really good flick with a (I hesitate to say it) really good message... Owen Wilson does his best Woody Allen and may have out Woodyed Woody himself. Wow so many of my heros and heroines in this one... here's a quote from Papa himself:

Ernest Hemingway: All men fear death. It's a natural fear that consumes us all. We fear death because we feel that we haven't loved well enough or loved at all, which ultimately are one and the same. However, when you make love with a truly great woman, one that deserves the utmost respect in this world and one that makes you feel truly powerful, that fear of death completely disappears. Because when you are sharing your body and heart with a great woman the world fades away. You two are the only ones in the entire universe. You conquer what most lesser men have never conquered before, you have conquered a great woman's heart, the most vulnerable thing she can offer to another. Death no longer lingers in the mind. Fear no longer clouds your heart. Only passion for living, and for loving, become your sole reality. This is no easy task for it takes insurmountable courage. But remember this, for that moment when you are making love with a woman of true greatness you will feel immortal.

The window at Gunther's Tap Room in Northport Village won't be the same without Freddy Piercey stationed at his usual corner chair, waggling his fingers in greeting to his many friends.

"We joked he held up the wall for 30 years," said Debi Curzio, a bartender at Gunther's who counted herself among Piercey's closest friends.

Piercey's body was discovered in Northport Harbor Saturday morning, more than two weeks after he was reported missing after leaving Gunther's on Dec. 6.

Suffolk County police said Piercey's death did not appear to be suspicious, but they did not release a cause.

Monday, Northport residents recalled Piercey, 68, who friends said lived on a sailboat in Northport Harbor, as a tough, loyal friend who drummed on his legs and had a penchant for Spam.

Northport resident Tony Corcione sat in Piercey's usual seat at Gunther's Monday -- next to the New York Lottery forms, with a clear view of Main Street out of the window. He said Piercey could often be seen walking around the village, refusing rides that Corcione or others offered him.

"He was his own man," Corcione said. "He didn't ask anybody for anything."

Piercey, who was born above the Northport Sweet Shop in 1943, was estranged from his family, friends said.

But he counted legions among his friends in the village, where he cut a distinctive figure with his long, ZZ Top-style beard and colorful language. His best jibes were reserved for those he truly loved, said another friend, Joseph Norton, of Northport.

"If he didn't call you a rat . . . he didn't love you," Norton said. "He was funny, intelligent and stood his ground."

Piercey's frankness even extended to his brushes with fame -- he used to drink alongside writer Jack Kerouac at Gunther's, but seemed unimpressed, Curzio said. He saved some choice words to describe the "On the Road" author, calling him an "idiot" and worse.

While Piercey was picky about his friends, he adored animals and small children, those who knew him said. He distributed candy outside Gunther's on Halloween this year, much to the delight of Northport's trick-or-treaters.

"Children or animals always gravitated toward him," said Jeanne Goldschrafe, 60, of Northport, who added that she was a longtime friend of Piercey's. "You can't get a better judge than a dog or a kid."

Memorial service details were not available Monday and Piercey's family could not be reached for comment. Curzio said Piercey would have wanted to be cremated, with his remains scattered at Northport's Scudder Beach.

"Freddy lived his life the way he wanted to and Freddy went out the way he wanted to," Curzio said. "And that, my friend, that's key."

Can't even remember everything I have read last couple of week, nothing stands out. Gave in to temptation and brought from the library "Hunger Games", have a hold on "So Much Pretty" that was lauded by guys on Deadwood forum where I still lurk...  "The Winter Tale" is a LONG story, Flower, so it sits on my bookshelf....

Feel ready for Kindle! However, noticed a troubling trend - Amazon sells Kindle books for MORE now than their paper copies! It means they will price out books very soon. So maybe we have to turn our  Luddites gene on! "Occupy Kindle" or something like that.  ??? :D  :-[

Winter is in full swing, so new TV shows provide needed respite. I will be watching some, if only for a pilot episode.

"Alcatraz" tonight on Fox - "Lost" cousin
"Touch", Fox, haha - a tender version of Kiefir Sutherland?
"The Lost Girl" tonight on SyFy
"I Just Want My Pants Back" - MTV, 'cause I like the title
"Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23" for the same, title
"The River" - ABC - for Bruce Greenwood and possibly some magic
The Finder - Fox

"House of Lies" on Show is ridiculous to me, Don Cheadle deserves better, the pilot of "The Fades" on BBC America was disappointing.
New season of "Justified" starts tomorrow and "Heel on Wheels" ended its first season last night, I'm glad it's been renewed.

What are you guys watching?
Title: Re: Hit Or Miss II
Post by: Sven2 on January 27, 2012, 02:59:26 PM
Only my opinion, of course, though here it is.

The Lost Girl is another vampire/zombie/witches/etc flick, the main character is interesting only for her resemblance of Sienna Miller.
Alcatraz hopes to make 304 episodes or something, trying to hunt down every single killer who escaped the island, but it gets old pretty soon. I might watch few more episodes.
The Finder has very unattractive cast, banal plot, isn't worth the time.

Touch is intent on something more than an autistic boy's visions of the future, if it succeeds to show how we all are interconnected and, unknown to us, affect each other and possibly even a planet - that would be great. I liked the pilot and will watch how it will play out.

As I read about Luck - only some parts of the articles, so as not to learn all the twists of its plot, I get the impression that it will be lauded by critics, most of the reviews are in favor, so there is some hope its luck will last more than just one season. They call Milch's screenplay poetic and the whole concept of good karma of kindness is something that we so loved in JFC, so no matter what, I will watch the story, many times if needed, to understand and soak in all the rich undertones. I am sure it will be rewarding.

HUGO...All cinemaphiles will love this film, Scorsese's anthem to the origins of the moving picture. I would normally skip the 3D version of any film (opting for the 2D) but since this film was only shown in 3D, I donned the glasses and was blown away. The plot is fantastic and the 3D actually adds to the photography. No gimmickry here, the 3D blends right in and actually gives me hope as to what the future may hold for 3D films. Ben Kingsley is wonderful as is Sacha Baron Cohen and Christopher Lee. A real treat for movie lovers.

Netflix is driving me crazy - waiting is way too long!
"Debt" was interesting  in places, the retro scenes and the young actress exceptionally good. What was totally unbelievable, that's quite an old Nazi doctor they show in the beginning, would survive until present time, what would he be now - 110 years old?

Watched Helen Mirren in one of her earlier and weirder movies "The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover", didn't like neither the movie, nor the role.
Received "Anonymous", by Emmerich  (2012, Day After Tomorrow, etc.) something about Shakespeare being a fake figure, didn't watch it yet.

Flower, how are you, are you reading in bed, watching nekked women on TV already? Just kiddin'... Love ya, get well!

Recently saw "Texas Killing Fields", well constructed and skillfully shot, a little overburdened with clearly "southern" film-noir elements. Ami Canaan Mann, the director, just happened to be Michael Mann daughter - oh, those Hollywood dynasties! Father's hand/guidance is quite easy to notice. The pair of detectives, (one is Sam Worthington from "Avatar") are a very good match. Nice soundtrack, with "Mazzy Star" that I like.

Flower, you got some stuff left for the BB here, or spend all your bounty on FB? C'mon!

Watched a movie about a Mormon type fundamentalist church/cult, "Follow The Prophet" with sick incestuous ideas. The film felt as if it's been made specially for the election year, anti-Romney sort. It was half action, half "expose" as it's called.

Saw "The Air I Breath", few disparate stories tied at the end, dark and with the good cast - K.Bacon, Forest Whitaker, Brendan Fraser, Sarah M. Gellar and Andy Garcia. Very violent but with an exit for some of the characters. I liked it.

This thread was educational, fun and mustn't be neglected. I have found it useful just now, trying to remember a title of a book that slipped my mind, used Google, Wiki, etc, but to my great pleasure easily found it here.

To return to the topic - saw two of the latest blockbusters - Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises. Spidey remake is, despite getting good money at the box office, an abbreviated, rushed copy-cat with both leads unattractive - of course, it's only my opinion, but c'mon, Kirsten Dunst  kissing Tobey Maguire who's hanging upside down was unforgettably original and sweet.

As to the end of the Nolan trilogy - darkness has overtaken the story, overflowed the screen.  Besides, the ending is a call for a prequel or a sequel, forget Nolan's oath he's done with the Batman franchise.  Although, I agree, supermen don't die. One would only wish they could save us all, in real life.
