WildCoast on HBO’s New Series, “John from Cincinnati”

HBO’S newest series, John from Cincinnati, about the mixed up Yost family from Imperial Beach, California, premiered on Sunday. Imperial Beach based- WiLDCOAST has worked closely with the entire cast and crew of John from Cincinnati while filming took place in Imperial Beach including just outside the WiLDCOAST office.

Check for the WiLDCOAST Clean Water Now signs displayed prominently in the Yost surf shop and for later episodes to feature WLDCOAST t-shirts, staff members and events. The WiLDCOAST “eco-lucha libre” stars appear in the ring during the opening credits.

According to WiLDCOAST Executive Director, Serge Dedina, “The entire cast and crew of John from Cincinnati have treated locals really well and have made a big commitment to hiring locals, supporting local businesses and giving back to local non-profits.” The production company generously supported last year’s WiLDCOAST Dempsey Holder Surf Contest Local surfers including Kyle Knox and Baltazar Macias have worked on the show. And IB locals have enjoyed surfing with series stars Brian Van Holt and Austin Nichols as well as with series writer and surf consultant Steve Hawk and surfers such as Jon Jon Florence, Brad Gerlach, Dan Malloy and Brock Little. Serge’s sons Israel and Daniel, who are hardcore IB groms in real life have recurring roles as IB surf grommets in the show.

Created by David Milch (HBO’s ‘Deadwood’), and “surf-noir” novelist Kem Nunn (Tijuana Straits), “John From Cincinnati” stars Brian Van Holt, Bruce Greenwood, Luke Perry, Rebecca De Mornay, Luis Guzman, Willie Gerson, Austin Nichols, Ed O’Neil and Greyson Fletcher. According to Dedina, “WiLDCOAST worked closely with series writer and Co-producer Kem Nunn while he researched Tijuana Straits, his brilliant novel about surfing in Imperial Beach and life along the border, so it was only natural that we lend a hand when Kem and David Milch brought their production to Imperial Beach.

The first two episodes of John from Cincinnati provide stunning vistas of Imperial Beach, including opening sequences filmed in the Tijuana Estuary and surfing south of the IB pier.
