Title: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: Sven2 on June 09, 2010, 08:53:19 PM
Trish, the sound in the videos is breaking up, that was not happening when I first posted them. Is that my computer (although I have FIOs), YouTube or is that something else?
Would you, please, check?

Videos are not breaking up for me.  Could be your computer or the connection at that time.

In order to add an image to a post you need to do the following...

1. Copy the image url from it's page in the gallery:

2. In the post use the "Image Tag" button:

3.  Paste in the url from Step #1:

And... Wah-Lah...  Image added to post  :D

I swear I did all the same, Trish, and have got (grammar?)only a link :-[

You guys both are way ahead of me!

Now, how to make those images bigger, let's say up to the size of videos?

And, Waxon, I'd say it was Moana, but I'm not sure.

Ding Ding! Correct.

( I used the pic from FB)

So, Waxon, is it easy to post those pictures here?
Would you like to open a thread for the trivia? I think this "bar" thread is good for general conversation, however, since the BB is not exactly crowded yet, that is not important.

I cleaned up my profile and will not post on FB anymore, done!

I am an idiot, I posted the page link instead of URL. Of course it wouldn't work!
Thanks again, Trishah.

What the hell's happening? The threads multiply! Besides I didn't open any of them myself! Trish, if that's you, have pity, I'm losing my mind, ahahaha ;D

But- I still can't manage to post a picture of Butchie, no luck with any others. I add to the album and that's all I can do. Maybe I'll try tomorrow, with clear head.

There is a mod that will allow someone to post large images but only show a smaller one on the post.  You have to click a link to enlarge the image:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1197 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1197)

But I couldn't find anything to enlarge images on the forum itself.  But there are online image resizers that you can use:

http://www.resize2mail.com (http://www.resize2mail.com)

Sorry if I'm confusing you.  I just now learned how to break off part of a thread and create a new thread out of it.  But it takes the name from the post of the first person in the split-off posts as the thread creator.

Hey we are all learning!  Sleep well.

One more problem: when I was "beautifying" archived episode 18 (I know someone who needs to read it here), it exceeded the limit. Would you increase that a little bit, please, just in case.
That's all for tonight. I am so glad I have time off, good to learn something useful.

See you tomorrow. Glad you wrote to Back.

I have increased the size allowed by another 6000 characters.  That "should" be enough for even you prolific writers... but we'll see... ;->

Sven, now that you are a moderator, do you have an "admin" button in the middle of the top navigation buttons?  If so, you could go in there and change things like post size yourself.  If not, I'm happy to continue to do these things.

Yes, I have the admin button, didn't try using it yet.
How do I minimize a picture?
Still no luck with posting a picture from an album, ???
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread

This is a simple free image resizer site:  http://www.resize2mail.com (http://www.resize2mail.com)

As for adding an image...

1. Make sure you have the full url starting with the "http" and ending with image name.  To be absolutely sure the url works, paste it into the address bar of your browser and see if the image shows up.  If not, you are using the wrong url.

2.  Once you know the url works, put the image tags around it.

I really can't explain it any better.

Trish, unfortunately something is broken in the media gallery. When I try to add a picture from my computer to an album, it says "an invalid code jpg". The same message appeared when someone I asked to help (he knows programming) tried to add an image. Since all internet images are jpg, I don't think it's working. Maybe you would look into this problem? It seems that you could add anything, is that correct?
Thanks! Have a great weekend. It's gray and rainy here.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on June 12, 2010, 05:32:48 PM
Okay, the upload is working now.

There was a list of file extensions allowed for upload and gif, jpg and png was not on it so I added them and then successfully uploaded a jpg to an album.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: Sven2 on June 13, 2010, 07:20:46 PM
Experiment, just to see if the media gallery works.

Trish, you can open the post and see for yourself what is wrong. The image was just a cover  for an album, and adding to an album is still not possible, the same "wrong code jpg" message comes up.
And anyone else, besides moderators, would need an approval, so that is another hurdle. (Perhaps it is necessary so as not to see some obnoxious pictures).

Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on June 14, 2010, 02:40:06 AM
UGH... ok, I think I see the problem...  The url for the images are not real web addresses, the software is creating them so there is no way for a browser to find them.

It's taken me all night but this is the only solution I've found....  I've installed an additional gallery that is much simpler than the original one.  FYI: The other one is still there I've just changed the link.  Anyway...

This new gallery gives the actual BB code for each image so no mistaking what to put where.  Let's see if this works.

Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: Sven2 on June 14, 2010, 10:45:34 AM
The new gallery exists, but there is no option that I could find to add or to open a new gallery.
Experiment:(http://johnfromcincinnati.net/forum/gallery/1_14_06_10_4_56_07.gif)
This picture is the only one that has the codes. It works.
Half way there!
Trish, you didn't have to stay up all night to work on that, a lot of pictures are on internet available and easy to post here. That problem mostly would have an effect on Waxon's Trivia Game. Still, I understand the frustration it causes you, the pro!
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on June 14, 2010, 04:51:34 PM
The reason I did it, is that things on the internet go down all the time.  We already lost a lot of the promo videos that were taken off of YouTube, so I wanted to collect our own images so we never lose them again.

Yes, with the new gallery, the categories have to be created by the admin.  I'll keep looking for other options later but for now, at least we have a place to keep them safe.

The only images you can copy are ones added to the galleries themselves and not the category images.  You can use the one Jerri & Dwayne image bc it was placed inside the gallery.

I have added a "Waxon's Trivia Game" category.

Now I'm off to other projects...

Thanks for all of you work on this!  I will say that most of the pictures I have captured are on our facebook page.  I would love to preserve them here, but there are over 100 of them.  Not sure what your capacity is, Save.

BTW, this site is awesome!  Thank you.

You are very welcome!  I am happy to do it.... wish I had more time!

My capacity is unlimited.  If the site was terribly active it might be a problem, but we are fine right now.  And all my other high volume sites are on other accounts so if you have the time to bring them over, feel free.  That's what the site is here for!

Fake Registrations

I took some time tonight to search the membership base to find registrations from the same IP address.  There were some, actually quite a few, that have literally hundreds of accounts for the same IP!  Some did 50 or more in one day... ugh!

So I went through and deleted these.  And then I added their IP's to our banned IP list.

Additionally, I added a new anti-bot measure on the registration forum.  It adds:

Adds a randomly chosen puzzle
    Shapes
    Math
    Colors
Random tweaks in each puzzle
Random input field

Example:

        What is the sum of (as a number)  9 - 5 + ONE =

Hopefully, this will keep the false registrations down and keep us from getting spammed.

Trishah

Good, Trish, cleaning the debris!

Aghmmm, just one little tiny thing. ::) ;D Now our own Captain can't register, (after he accidentally deleted his acct.), he gets a message that double registration is not allowed. I tried to activate his account, didn't work.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread

The last message the system sent him said:

Your email address needs to be validated before you can login. - captpeace
         http://johnfromcincinnati.net/forum/index.php?action=login2 (http://johnfromcincinnati.net/forum/index.php?action=login2)

I only see one account with his IP in the database and it looks like it is active.

If he can't verify his address or login, have him clear his cache and cookies, close and reopen his browser, and try again.  If he is still getting an error message, have him send it to me here.

I don't know yet if Captain tried to register again or post.  We'll see tomorrow, oh, it's today already.

Wonderful new addition to the image gallery, Trishah, Nick's photos of Snug Harbor are good. The only thing is - maybe we have to ask his permission to put the pics on our site, what do you think? He is a very friendly guy, still it's just common courtesy. I think he would agree.

Edited to add: Maybe the poll should be a separate topic, it gets missed on the tech thread I think.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on June 18, 2010, 01:28:32 AM
I'll make the poll a separate thread.  Good call.

About the photos, I was rushed or I would have remembered to give him credit in the photo info. I'll go do that now.  And ask his permission if it's okay...  what do they say... better to ask forgiveness than permission   ;)

Trish, when you're done with all the improvements and corrections, it perhaps would help if the "How to" (or something like that) thread existed. It could be at the beginning of this thread even, convenient I think.

Good new emoticons, I like them.

I think a "How To" thread would be a good idea.  I think that this is very new to you, you probably have more idea of the kind of things that need explaining... like what would have been helpful for you to know.  I just assume a lot being I've done so much of this.

I saw the topic, good to have it always on top of everything - for anyone who might experience some difficulties. I didn't mean myself, by the way, I talked to couple of people, they needed to get comfortable on the BB and that thread should help. Thanks, Trishah, you work with the lightning speed!

Trishah, why in your posts the time stamp is different from mine or Waxon's? Can we adjust the clock so it shows let's say, Eastern time for every post? I know that's how it's  on blogs.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on June 23, 2010, 12:24:04 AM
In your profile you can set your clock to show the correct time given your time zone.  I just went in and changed my setting tonight so the date and time of the forum shows correct east coast time.

It's under:  Profile > Modify Profile > Look and Layout Preferences > Time Offset: then hit "auto detect".

Then the time in the upper right of your screen will be your correct time.

Trishah, I looked at the 1st page of Music thread,  bottom half of the posts are only links, with the message -"embed disabled, limit reached".
On YouTube these vids have normal embed option, but when  I tried to post the same links again I got the same result. Would you look into the problem, please?
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on June 25, 2010, 01:13:53 AM
I increased the maximum number of videos allowed per page.  And I think in our case, a "page" means a "thread".  It was set at "12", I've upped it to "120".  Let me know if this fixes it.  If so I'll up it even more so we don't run into this again.

It works, videos are back. Thanks!

Now the "preview" window is all dark blue, it makes editing big pieces of text difficult. I changed color, but that didn't change the preview , only the background of the post. I will try again.

Trishah, would you tell, what criteria are you using to screen registrations and users - against double registrations, against our list of JFC fans, or something else?

I like the option of signing in from any place in the world, just with the user name and the password.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on July 04, 2010, 08:22:49 AM
I added a captcha field to try to cut down on non-human registrations but apparently the bots have gotten smarter.

So I also integrated our forum registration with Honey Pot, http://www.projecthoneypot.org/?rf=62759, (http://www.projecthoneypot.org/?rf=62759,) which is a very well known black list that uses information collected from a multitude of sites to create their list.  Whomever is on their list is blocked from any site that uses the list.  IOW, it is a group consensus that an IP is bad not just from one instance.

The reason the second IP you were using was blocked is because I manually blocked it by mistake.  This should not happen again.

Hey Trishah!
I've been trying to post on the website from work where I sign in to wireless networks afforded the press.(Yankee Stadium most recently) The website won't allow me in (I got in last week and the week before). I get a full screen message telling me that my computer is engaged in malicious behavior. I have real time virus protection through McAffee and this does not happen on my home wireless. Any thoughts? Work is really the best time for me to post...I can't stay awake at night lately.

Trish, did you hear from Ray?

Last night I tried to post Captain's scene in the Further Days blog and the text looked like poetry, in long and narrow columns. I used to simply copy and paste everything from the BB to the blog and that worked. Is it Blogger or did you change software?

Need advice. Could be significant for the info blog in the future, I think.

I didn't do anything different here.  But what you are talking about is that formatting is being transferred with the text.  What I would suggest is to try this...

(1) Copy the text from our forum,
(2) Temporarily paste it into NotePad.  This will strip everything but the line breaks from it.
(3) Copy the text from NotePad.
(4) Post it where you want online.

Very cumbersome, but I'll try. Though Waxon and Captain both have access to the FD blog, as have everyone else who used to write the story except SpiritontheWater. He probably will not write anymore, the same could be with Backinthegame. Though whoever wishes always can get access to the blog, easy to arrange.

I will post in the info blog in the future,-  whatever you (we?) decide to name it - and re-post it here, as that would be from the Net sources, very simple.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread

Trishah, I think the logging in is a problem for some reason. Ray tried many times today and was getting "the name doesn't exist" message, however I found the name easily, it does exist. Please, look into that.

The transfer of posts is temporarily out of the question, since our friend C. deleted his. He promised to send it to me again, I hope he can retrieve it from his files.

The info blog looks identical to all the rest of our sites, I thought I suddenly had double vision, and that made me dizzy and a little discouraged. Duplicating things make them less interesting in my opinion. Maybe redesign would be more beneficial. I think Wordpress is not better than Blogger, since Blogger introduced interesting templates, etc., that are very easy to customize. I will send you some blog pages or website front pages to show what I like. Apologize for communicating on the thread, I don't have time to go through  PMs, besides it is not really a private conversation.

Glad this helped!  Now we know what to do to get around this problem in the future!

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO WHITELIST YOUR IP:

NOTE:  ONLY do this if you are having a problem logging in from a particular location!!  Do NOT do this for general login, registration or password problems.

(1) Go to:  http://www.whatismyip.com (http://www.whatismyip.com) to find out what your IP address is.

(2) Got to:  http://www.projecthoneypot.org/home.php (http://www.projecthoneypot.org/home.php)

(3)  Browse the listing for your IP and there will be a link on the left to request automatic white listing which will whitelist the IP assuming no further activity results in a recurrence of the listing.

Trishah, would it be possible to put a direct link in the top information about this new site on SaveJFC main page, where it says that the old page is not updated anymore? That would simplify the transition from there to here. Some lazy souls, you know...(like me! :D) have everything "on a speed dial".

I would also note, that the music from JFC that automatically starts when one gets to the site perhaps could be reduced to a few soundbites, as it is intrusive, while one tries to get oriented around the site, besides some have their sound turned up to maximum, so it is a shock.  The catchphrases are very good, though, I'd keep that! That would also help with the "overcrowding" of the main page, 'cause then the dials could be eliminated. It is of course, my personal opinion, but changes are part of progress. Sorry for using such a cliche!

I didn't get to think much about the info blog yet. What do you think about a different design? By the way, Deadwood site, that you so thoughtfully designed, even at this unfinished stage looks modern and cool, I loved it better than ours. Would you like to let Deadwood people know that it exists? I could do that, but the work is 100% yours, you should take the credit. You can register and introduce yourself, simple, and you already know these people from HBO Deadwood forum. I have a link, if you need it.

That's all for now. (I intensely dislike every time going through the verification charades in PMs, especially in the dark of the night, sorry for using the open thread. I hope it's OK with you.

The sound is turned down to 50% on the new site.  If you noticed the volume dial is in the middle not way up.  If you have a different percentage you want me to try then please tell me what percentage you want it at and I'll change it.  I want to keep the player since then it gives people the option of listening to more than one.

You said you were going to show me examples of what looks you like so I was waiting on that.  I simply do not have any more time to redesign things now.  And the DeadwoodChronicles.com site is no where's near finished so I don't want to advertise it until I get all the pages done and that is going to take a long time since it is really the least of my priorities...  I'm trying to get 3 different businesses up and running so I simply don't have the time.

Trishah, would it be good to have a thread, not a site and a link  with the same purpose as the memorial page from the funeral home? That could be an easier way to write something about our girl. The portrait of Tammy you posted and a flying bird are nice, and I remembered another Tammy's photo, I think it's in her profile here on the BB. She is a bit younger there, a beautiful, full of joy woman.

I am sure everyone would like to hear some of the stories YOU must have about your work together on BOSS, about the hard time Tammy was giving a PR man from HBO, etc. Would you write that? Only Skor, I think, had met with Tammy, maybe she wouldn't mind  telling us something? Ray/Zippy was working on the film with Tammy and you, maybe he remembers something?

What do you think?

We are alive when remembered, only the memories are too fleeting.

Thanks, Trishah for the thread! Does anyone have more pictures of Tammy, maybe from Facebook?

Trishah, what happened to the link to Amazon? I think it's the time of the year when shopping frenzy is hmmm, given an absolution, even "sanctified", so it could give the site upkeep fund some support. I don't buy much, but books on Amazon, however online shopping is a billion dollar business, a pity to neglect it.

Maybe those ghostly (and ghastly) merchants that seem to relocate to JFC for their dealings (a woodstove, anyone?) would be so considerate as to buy something from Amazon. Who knows......

What do you think?

Okay, I did a quick rework of the homepage to include the amazon search again.  No one has really used it in a long time and it hasn't brought in any money since the Spring.

But maybe we could create a "sales page" on the site and see if we can promote it and get some more people clicking though...  Can't do it now, but let's revisit the idea in January.

The last couple days I have gotten warnings from the server saying there was some problems connecting the forums database.  Everything seems to be okay now, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Happy Holidays!

Trishah, maybe it's time to clean the stables. I am dismayed at growing rapidly (should've said rabidly!) membership on the site - merchants and nothing else. None ever said a word as to why and for what purpose have they landed here.
I was reading "The JFC experience",  if you want - go and see for yourself  - the comments there are just spam, links to the sites selling Viagra and such.

If there is nothing to do on JFC bulletin board it doesn't mean it should be turned into a ghost town, or a hub of shady commerce.

What is your opinion?
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on January 12, 2011, 04:57:33 AM
I just sent Marc a message to make him aware of the situation over there.

I see your concern.  I'm not sure what we can do as far as participation at the site unless we want to change the site's focus in some way in order to attract more members.  And unless we create a JFC Matrix program (really I'm just joking with that one) or run games and contests with valuable prizes I don't know what would bring people in.

And maybe that isn't the point.  Maybe we have to look at this site like high school.  We all had our community experience once, good-bad-or-indifferent... Some of us moved away.... Some of us never left town... Some of us stayed in touch over the years... Some were never heard from again...  Some come back for a visit now and then...  And there are always the reunions for those who care for that sort of thing.

I will keep this site here as long as I am alive and can click a mouse.  I said from the beginning, though I don't think many believed me, that I was in it for the long haul.

I love your updates on Milch and the gang.  And the music videos.  And I wouldn't take it personally when people move on.

Guess we should just ask....  What would JOHN do?

That people silently stop by and happily sail away doesn't bother me at all, and just like yourself, I am here for as long as I can manage. My worries are addressed to the unknown, practically unknowable actions of all those with commercial websites that are doing their deals here, under the cover of JFC. I suggest to look at registered members that list their websites.

I am for purging the shopkeepers.

Just a note, Trishah. I checked the old site, SaveJFC. There's no working link to this new place. Please, see if you can fix that. If you click on the subtitle "this site is no longer updated, please click" etc, it sends you back to the same SaveJFC site.

We are in the eye of a blizzard, 18" of snow already with strong winds, even the dog doesn't want to go out in this weather, so I'm "channels surfing".

All fixed.  I may have missed a few pages but all the important ones are done.

We only got about 6 inches here.  Just enough to make the old dirty snow drifts look fresh.

I have more photos from the most recent storm I haven't added to my little winter storm site yet. Maybe today.

The best way to get a photo on the site is to post it somewhere online.  This will then give you a link for the image and you can then use the bbcode for images:

http://johnfromcincinnati.net/graphics/screenshots/img_tag.jpg (http://johnfromcincinnati.net/graphics/screenshots/img_tag.jpg)

If you don't have a flickr or paintbucket account then you can add it to our media center gallery.  The link for it is in the nav menu way on top of this page or here: http://johnfromcincinnati.net/forum/index.php?action=gallery (http://johnfromcincinnati.net/forum/index.php?action=gallery)

Trishah, some newly registered people ask questions right in their profile, here's one that I copied and thought to re-post here.
From tibneelin

"I think this board is the proper place to ask you about the activation process. My link is not working properly, do you know why it is happening? [url=http://johnfromcincinnati.net/?7e1a73ec6089da912"

It's a link to a website, I think.  Must be selling some stuff, nothing exciting, anyways.

I checked the site for the rating as you've asked, it seems quite a small outfit, can hardly bring masses to this place, besides it doesn't allow anonymous rating.
Will send you something for the domain as soon as I get to updating my PanPal acct.

Thanks for checking into the site.

And as for them money, it is not a problem.   We still have $180-ish in the account.  And since I provide free hosting that $180 will last approximately 12 years of domain names  ;D  Assuming we don't need to purchase anything else.

Hello All :D

I just did another update.  This time to the registration page.   I received an email for someone who tried to register and was getting an error.  After looking into this I determined it was the old captcha system that was the problem.

There is now a picture puzzle that needs to be completed in order to register.   This has better security than the old captcha.

I have a friend in the UK who sends me music videos every Friday... For years I've taken Friday nights off and do a "SciFi Pizza Friday".  I save up all my SciFi shows on DVR all week and watch them over pizza on Friday nights.  I've done some work for my UK friend and my payment are Friday Night Music Videos to view before I close down for the night.  So I think I may just pick one or two and post on our music thread... Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread

Sorry to hear you are having these problems.

I do not know about the FF/Chrome issue you are having.  All I can suggest is that you clear your cache, close FF, then when you come back hit Crl-F5 to force a full page refresh.

As for the images not showing... This may be caused with some clean up I did recently.  Apparently the hosting account I have this site on has way too many files.  This meant that my server was not being backed up.  I had to go through and backup and delete anything that wasn't currently being used.  This meant I had to delete the johnfromcincinnati.net forum off the server (yes I have everything backed up).  The problem is that both this forum and that forum were using the same database.  This was fine when there were duplicate copies over there for this system to use, but is now a problem when they are not longer where they should be.  I just have to go through and make sure everything is linked to these files instead of the old ones.

I guess I should have made an announcement about this before I did it.  I apologize for not doing this.  I thought I had gotten everything relinked.  I'm working on this now.  I'll let you know when I think I have it fixed...

I'm so glad to hear it's working now!

If it is working in FF, Chrome and IE then it's a good bet it's working in others also, but feel free to check if you want to.  When I first created the forum I did try it using: http://browsershots.org/ (http://browsershots.org/)  which takes screen shots of a site using different operating systems and different browser combinations.  It's takes a while to get back the results and you have to keep monitoring it and extending the time to get them all done.  But the results are invaluable.  I haven't done it lately and I'm very busy right now, so if you want to try it just to make sure...  You can just check the most popular browsers because the less you choose the faster you get the results.

BTW, in fixing the image problem, I ran across the fact that there is a new forum software that is being developed that is supposed to be the next generation in free forum software, Wedge (http://wedge.org/).  Once it launches the software we are currently using for our gallery and video will be moved over to there and SMF will no longer be supported.  I'm sure they will have "moving packs" that will help with translating sites from one system onto their new system.  When that happens and the new forum software is stable, I will move our forum to the new system.  No time frame right now, just giving you a heads-up.

Hello Sven,

Welcome back from your vaca, and thank you for your kind words.   :)

As for the site upkeep... As I am hosting everything on my personal server that is free, so the only cost is the domain names: johnfromcincinnati.net, savejfc.net & savejfc.com  This runs about $40 a year.  So we have enough in the fund for about 6 years more.

This brings me to something I've been thinking about of late... Getting older and working on my will, I keep thinking about my domains, like this one, I would like it to survive well past me... as it is the only place on the web that has the historical record of the show...  but how to do that is the question.

If something happens to me then the site will stay up as long as (1) the PayPal account I have as it's funding source for my hosting account still has enough money to pay for it's yearly payment, or (2) something technical doesn't happens that can't be fixed without cPanel access which currently only I have.

I would gladly move it to a different hosting account if it was someplace that will have longevity and not cost a lot.  I'm just at a loss as to what that might be.  Any suggestions?

Hi, Trish,
Isn't there something like "cloud" to place JFC site there to preserve it, even if it will be not functioning in real time - I mean no one would be able to change a thing?

I think you may want to enlist someone from your group of friends in programming circles, if that might require some form of payment for their work we'll see what can be done about that.

I hope you stay healthy and active for many more years though, continue your tremendous work on JFC site, your beautiful creation.

We all are a breath away from eternity, as someone once said.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on September 07, 2012, 08:12:27 AM
Storing it on a "cloud" someplace would preserver the data.  I don't know of any free ones at the present time but will keep looking.

There are hosts that boast "free hosting" which are actual hosting accounts but have limits.  One of the most reputable has a storage, or disc space limit, of 1,500 MB but you have to own all copyrights to the material you host there.

I just checked and the current size of this domain, not counting the size of the database or email, is about 670 MB.  Now I will go through the site and find any redundant or unnecessary information and remove it, but it's still going to be a big site!   Another option to reduce size is to turn it into a WordPress site which will help some but it will do nothing for the size of this forum which is currently around 390 MB.

I have written Marc who did the digital work for JOHN to see if he has any ideas.  I also found this pdf from the Association of Research Libraries that talks about changing copyright laws to deal with the digital age...  http://www.arl.org/bm~doc/the-ala-and-arl-position-on-access-and-digital-preservation.pdf (http://www.arl.org/bm~doc/the-ala-and-arl-position-on-access-and-digital-preservation.pdf)

And THAT got me thinking that what is really needed is some form of a Trust Fund that would preserver digital art just like old movies are preserved...  I really like this idea.  Anyone want to research if there is anyone currently out there doing this?

So, I need to get back to my work for the day.  I'll stop by later with the weekly music installment.

Trish,

On the music thread the vids are taking forever to load. Or - may it be that I got a hundred (OK, just 50!) windows open on the computer? Is that the same with you?

BTW,
always forget to thank you for the Friday music - please, continue, those are  interesting selections, off the beaten path.
Title: Re: Technical Forum & Website Discussion Thread
Post by: SaveJFC Admin on October 10, 2012, 01:00:35 PM
Hi Sven,

Yes it takes long to load.  I think it's because I've been putting 3 videos per post and when you load the page, every video has to load.  Let me see if I can limit the number of posts shown on a page and that will make the page load faster.

As for not posting on Fridays the last 2 weeks, it's because Julian's computer was crashing and he had to rebuild it and get all his programs reinstalled!  YUCK!  He's almost done with it so hopefully this Friday we will have more good music to post :D

Well Happy New Year to all!

Today I repurchased the domains savejfc.com and deadwoodchronicles.com for another year.  The Fund spreadsheet has been updated.  We currently have $147.45.

Every time I purchase the domains I am reminded how fragile our little site is... in that, if anything happens to me it would be gone as soon as the hosting account runs out :(   I did some research recently into what we could do to keep it alive and archive.org who keeps sites for just this purpose.  Here is their CalamityDan.com site for JOHN:

http://web.archive.org/web/20081225134900/http://www.calamitydan.com/protect/john_from_cincinnatti.htm (http://web.archive.org/web/20081225134900/http://www.calamitydan.com/protect/john_from_cincinnatti.htm)

Attention:  I just installed an security update to the forum.  This should not change any of the functioning or look of the forum as it had to do with technical coding behind-the-scenes.  But if you notice any differences please let me know.

Trishah, what type of a campaign do you mean, please, elaborate. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised seeing Dan's site preserved for... let's not call it "eternity",... say, for a while.

What is required for the site to get a place on this "webarchive.org" (or something)?

And Happy New Year to you as well! Stay healthy, keep in touch.

Wow, I'm writing this in a state of confusion, nothing earth shattering, of course. I was made to update Firefox and as a result lost a lot of links, "remembered" passwords, etc. Not sure what happened here, but when I got a new password for this site, I had a mailbox consisting of only 2 messages (from June 2010 I think), that I've never even seen before.
I wonder with what signature this post will appear and if there is a possibility to retrieve my old messages. Trishah, help.

Yes very strange!  Could it be possible that you have two accounts here and you logged into an old one?  I really can't imagine any other reason why updating your browser would you messages inside here.  I'll look and see if I can find any other reason...

I might have had more than one as I recall, signing in from different locations with different IPs, the problem is how to get to my Sven2 log in now that I am permanently logged as sven. Do you know what I should do?

A happy update: I restarted my computer and everything is back to the way it was, hooray. It left me worried though - a glitch, a loss, the whole story - it's like there is a fork in time or space and here is a parallel reality with another sven, and a Firefox profile that has some of my old one and some of a complete stranger who knows nothing of the past.

Hmm, whatever, I'm glad to get my bookmarks back, and my old messages.

So Happy Lovers' Day!

Thanks, Trish, now I know why the link from 'Further Days' blog didn't work, I had to update it.

It's a little jumpy now to move around here, seems too sensitive, or maybe my Firefox is acting up after the latest update. Or something else!

Hi, Trish, help!

I was reading some episodes in Further Days 2 blog and noticed that in some posts the punctuation turned into lots of question marks. How could I fix that without going through every line? Is that possible at all?

Thanks!

You are talking about the blog over at http://furtherdaysofjfc2.blogspot.com/ (http://furtherdaysofjfc2.blogspot.com/) correct?  I looked at some pages there and couldn't see the problem you described.

However, usually this problem is caused when you are not using the "UTF-8 html charset" for the page rendering.  And the fix is to make sure you have the following meta tag in the <head> of your page:

<meta http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html;charset=UTF-8">

To find out more about what UTF-8 does you can read about it here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-8 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-8)  Basically it tells the browser how to display the individual text characters on the page.  There are many different ones but UTF-8 has become the standard because it will display things like Chinese and Farsi languages correctly.

If you go to the Further Days blog homepage and right-click the page and choose "view page source" or "page source" depending on your browser, another window will open with the page code showing.  You can see at the top of the code the following line:  "<meta content='text/html; charset=UTF-8' http-equiv='Content-Type'/>"  which is in a different order but is the same as the earlier one I posted above.  So this means the homepage is being encoded correctly.  Please check to make sure the pages with the bad characters have this correct meta tag in them. If they do, then read on...

Now, if the question marks are only on certain pages, then my best guess for what has happened is this...  Whomever wrote the text on the page wrote it originally in Microsoft Word.  Then they copied and pasted it into the blog page as is.  MS Word has it's own unique way of displaying things like quote marks, accents and apostraphies.   When you copy and paste these into a web page the browser doesn't know what to do with them because they are unique to MS Word.

I don't know about Blogspot.com but I know the WordPress has a button on the Visual Editor that you can click and paste the text of a MS Word doc into the popup and when saved will replace all the bad characters.  You need to check your Blogspot editor setting for this.  You may be able simply to copy what is currently in your editor and run it through the same kind of button and that might work.

If it doesn't, you can try copying the text from webpage into a MS NotePad document (i.e., a .txt file).  Once there click on Ctrl-h and this will bring up the find and replace box.  Find one of the bad characters, copy it and put it in the find box then type the correct character in the replace box and hit "Replace All" button.  Keep doing this until all the bad characters are replaced, then go back and paste this revised .txt version back into the Blogspot editor.  This will also strip all the bold and italic which you will have to redo along with possibly some indenting, etc.

Let me know if this doesn't help you and we'll try something else.

Thanks a bunch! As soon as my second "smart" brain arrives from Amazon....

Seriously, it's above and beyond, I will just get rid of those nasty little flees by hand. I agree the reason was most likely transferring files written in MS Word. I've encountered this behavior somewhere else.

Thanks again, appreciate it. Stay cool, we're boiling here.

I do not know why that is happening :(  Unfortunately this could take some time to diagnose and I'm on a deadline right now with a project so this will have to wait.  Please feel free to remind me about this if I don't get back to you in a week...  There are many things that are "slipping through the cracks" for me right now so a reminder (if I forget) would be appreciated :)

Good! In 2017 will be ten years of JFC...

Side note: there is someone registered but not activated in the members list. Is activation done by a person themselves or by the admin?

Hi Sven,

The activation is done by the user.  It's a double confirm, meaning they subscribe and then have to confirm the subscription. If they are not activated they haven't confirmed.  Feel free to delete these as they are just taking up database space :)

BTW, I just deleted all the spam subscriptions, in case you were wondering where they went.

The Fund Update:

Domains were purchased this month.  Additionally, I was tardy in entering a contribution to The Fund in January 2017 as well as domain purchases a year ago (my bad).  I have corrected and updated The Fund spreadsheet accordingly.  Everything is now balanced.

Hi All,

I discovered tonight that our forum gallery was so out-of-date it was a security risk and was not working.  I went threw the steps to move it to a new gallery. It had a function to import the old gallery so I ran that option... unfortunately, nothing transferred.  <heavy sigh>  I'll keep working on it because the images are still on the server.

Also, just for Sven ;), I added a simple audio and video embedding mod.  Here is it's description:
QuoteAn auto embed media modification for SMF that takes links for popular video websites and adds a player directly into the post or bbc area of your website
So, all you need do is post the link and the video or audio should just show up.

Don't worry about the gallery, no rush to fix it.

Hi All,

Hope you are well and happy.

Just a note to let you know that so far this year we have used The Fund to renew 5 domain names for another year:

The other domain we own are:

The total in The Fund currently is:  $143.48.  We might want to consider letting a couple of these domains go in order to save money.  Let's discuss...

I vote, remotely, :D to stay on course. We can vote by mail, absentee ballot or in any other way!

Will $143.48 be enough to pay for one more year for all the domains and this site maintenance?
If not, how much is necessary?

P.S. We need more emogies, the selection is too limited.
